The Doomsday Clock countdown is closing in on zero. The wrinkled fabric of time makes its digits glitch more and more as it approaches doom... This was the easiest hack ever: an exercise timer brain transplant gave it new life.

Why must there be so many cool projects and so little time!?

52 robots in 52 weeks This weeks robot is a sort-of request for a machine to cut down floor scrubber pads. I pretty much started on Saturday, and I made some bad design choices for the amount of time I had, so this one didn't get finished (for now) I expect to get back to it.

In a corner of the workshop a CNC machine sits idle over a cut piece of metal. The air, otherwise peppered with the sound of cooling fans, stands silent. There are not blinking status lights, neigh the waft of fresh WD40 in the air, just silence.

There has been a new discovery during this (last) weeks robot build (which is going long). 'writers block' in a way, I get stuck waiting to finish a step before I can think properly about the next one. In the past I have tried "pretend this step is done" but it never works.

52 robots in 52 weeks, but right now, my brain is mush, need the sleep now. There is SO MUCH MORE to do, ugh.

Ugh, somewhere around midnight the mistakes started to ramp up, top holes were in the wrong place and I accidentally included the 0,0 origin lines in the milling program (aborted, but it cut most of the X line)

The plate for the control panel is too big for the cnc to do all on its own, so I hand cut it out and drilled it (via template), I will have the CNC cut the really particular square holes for the switches.

And then there were two. These are the support for the not-yet-existant pin that the big knob will thread onto (over the not-yet-existant base plate)

I suppose weekly robot can be looked at another way, 3 challenges combined: How long will it take me to build all the mechanical parts for this, How long will it take me to make the electronics for this, and how long will it take me to write the software for this.

I am waiting for the CNC to make me more parts... Its REALLY important to measure the time a project will take by the number of pieces! Custom pieces are the major factor, but even off the shelf part count will be a reflection on a projects.... temporal impact.

Yay for pre-made parts. These are 608 bearing blocks I made a long time ago, I made lots!

52 robots in 52 weeks I'm TOTALLY a timeline fail on this one, but I have the day off work tomorrow, and I usually dont make any descent progress till Thursday, so I'm not *quite* panicking yet. The primary frame for the robot is done.

I been 3d printing all day, I'm exhausted. 🤣

Remember kids, clean the dust off the table before you start the print so it sticks!

PAUSE. Wait.... Does this printer work?

Rue Mohr @ruenahcmohr.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
ok I have to stop robotting for a moment and eat this 2d printer. (sun opportunity)

ok, I have 3 of 5 printers running, but I dont have enough rolls of black plastic... hmmm

ok, 3 3d printers running, I need to sleep while waiting for parts. (and I need to fix the other two 3d printers and order more plastic)

I have 2 3d printers and a cnc running.... "If it was a commercial product, what might it look like?" well, I like it so far... (its taking too long to build tho)

Most of the design for the weekly robot is resolved, the mechanics are... progressing... I have a few more things to correct on the 3d prints before I can set all 5 printers on them.

parts side, sorry, its a bit sloppy, I wanted to see it working (and I got the LEDs backwards the first go)

ok, I gave a LOT of clues, what song did I choose for this PCB? I added a circuit to output audio, and there is a storage ROM, I plan to make one of these play about 6 seconds of music.

ok, I need to work on this weeks robot, this will require some grinding and welding which is yay, because there has not been enough of that so far this year. But today was not awesome so far so I'm distracted.

If something happens, the odds of it happening are 100%, the odds of it happening before it happened might have been lower, but after its 100%.

This weeks robot is a last (checks watch) second project, The goal is that it switches which direction its pointing every 24 hours. I shortened the cycle to 10 seconds. What I really like is that you could use any character cut out of a magazine or whatever.

The PCB shall use the unapproved hot-snot to hold it in place. and its complete! It has serious disco vibes...

The PCB is finished! I'm actually a hair late on this project, but thats ok.

This is *NOT* the way to strap these. Instead, solder one side to the pcb, and solder the other side while pulling on it with needlenose pliers. Then it will come out properly tight.

The robot is technically working, I have it on a 10 second timer. The person who suggested the project wants one that will switch sides every day, I cant film that long a video so I shortened the interval :]

ok, with electronics now! Remember, a motor can be an actuator without having to fully rotate! I have a 56 ohm resistor in series with the motor to limit the torque, which makes the string limit the natural stops for the motion.
