The Red Sox offseason mantra should be this: it is better to tank in July and dominate in September than it is to dominate in July and tank in September. They need to figure out how to have late-season success if they're going to go anywhere in the playoffs next year.

Now that the Red Sox have been eliminated, TNT should consider adding Payton Tolle to their on-air team for the broadcast of the Rays-Yankees series. He may not be great or polished at it, but he sure would be a lot more interesting to listen to than Rizzo.

I really have to wonder if the rumors of a tiff between Romy and Red Sox management are true. Why else wouldn't he be on this roster? Do the Red Sox not like winning?

Andruw Monasterio has been by far the worst hitter in the majors over the last month of the season. And his defense is poor. The Red Sox keeping him on this roster and Romy Gonzalez's very good bat and good 1B defense in AAA/taxi squad is baffling to me.

I'm absolutely disgusted that Monasterio is in at first base and Romy Gonzalez apparently is still on the taxi squad. Monasterio has been awful for over a month. Romy has been tearing up AAA for over a month, and over the long term has been the better major league player. Where's Romy?

Here's my Red Sox starting 9 for the playoffs: C: Rutschman IF: Durbin, Story, Gonzalez, and Contreras if able (otherwise Sogard at 2B and Gonzalez at 1B) OF/DH: Duran, Rafaela, Abreu, Anthony (in the chart, red is above average, blue below)

The Red Sox starting infield for the playoffs should be Durbin, Story, Gonzalez, and either Sogard or Contreras, depending on health. (in the chart, red is above average, blue below)

Gasper, Jones, and Monasterio all enjoyed multi-week hot streaks at the plate in the second half of 2026, but they've all gone cold now. Romy Gonzalez has had much more consistent production at the plate these past 2 years, and should be preferred over all these guys.

The Red Sox best 3 players lately have been Caleb Durbin, Jarren Duran, and Adley Rutchman. Yes, that's right, Jarren Duran. (in the chart, red is above average, blue below) Wilyer Abreu should have Sunday off, for 3 straight days of rest - the kind of rest that's turned his bat hot in the past.

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Gasper is out. Contreras is out. No reason left for the Red Sox to not bring up Romy Gonzalez. Put him at first base - it's his best defensive position, and he's actually pretty good there. If he's not too rusty from inaction this past week, he could really boost this somewhat stagnant offense.

If these teams were evenly matched and motivated, the odds of those 3 outcomes happening would be 1/8, 1/8, and 3/8, respectively, for an overall probability of about 0.6%. But differences in talent and/or motivation make this outcome more likely. I'd say it's between 2% and 3%.

Looks like there's one way for the Red Sox to end up as the third wildcard instead of the second. That's getting swept in 3 games by the Cubs, the White Sox sweeping the Rockies, and the Guardians taking 2 of 3 from KC, leaving all 3 teams tied.

Patrick Sandoval - 40 pitches in that first inning, and a heck of a lot of those were uncompetitive. Looks like they're gonna ride with him until he reaches his pitch count, regardless of outcome.

The Red Sox clinch a playoff berth with a win tomorrow. Or with an Astros loss. Or with a Rangers loss. Anyone giving you a more convoluted scenario for this has it wrong. (And that happened a lot yesterday.)

When I heard the announcer say that Durbin is going for third, I cried out "WHY?!??" before I could even see any of it, before he was actually thrown out. Given what followed that, it cost them at least two runs, and likely the game.

The Blue Jays win over the Rangers is unnecessary. A Sox win clinches outright over Toronto, and clinches a tie over the Rangers. Because the Red Sox hold the tiebreaker over the Rangers, the tie gets it done.

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
In NESN's pregame show for today's Red Sox game, they said the Red Sox clinch today if the Sox win and the Blue Jays beat the Rangers. This is incorrect. The Red Sox hold the tiebreaker over the Rangers, and a Red Sox win would clinch the tie, and thus the wild card spot.

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
A win today gets the Red Sox into the playoffs. They cannot "back in" to the playoffs despite a loss today, because that would only happen if both the Blue Jays and the Rangers lost today, and those two teams are playing each other today.

That's because if the White Sox, Guardians, Astros, and Rangers all pass the Red Sox in the standings, the Red Sox are eliminated from playoff contention. That's unlikely, but still possible. This is the third time this season I've found NESN to put out factually incorrect information.

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
NESN broadcasters keep saying that the Red Sox magic number is based on where they and the Blue Jays are in the standings. This is incorrect. The Blue Jays ending up behind the Red Sox in the standings doesn't guarantee that the Red Sox get a playoff spot. (1/2)

Romy Gonzalez was pulled from a game a week ago Tuesday with an injury that nobody ever explained. He finally returns a week later, and doesn't miss a beat, with a double and a walk. Over his last 7 games: 14-for-26, 3 doubles, 2 HR .538/.567/.885 slash line 1.451 OPS Call him up!

If the Red Sox win 5 of their remaining 12 games, they are in the playoffs (in a wild card spot). If they win just 4 of their remaining 12 games, there's a 99.99999924% chance they'll make the playoffs. I think they can pull this off.

If the Red Sox go 6-and-7 the rest of the way, then the Blue Jays, White Sox, & Guardians would all have to go undefeated for the Red Sox to be knocked out of the playoffs, except for the 3 games the White Sox and Guardians play against each other, in which the White Sox would have to win exactly 2.

Romy González in his last 5 games for the AAA Red Sox: 13-for-22 with 2 HR, 2 doubles, a walk, and a stolen base, for a 1.538 OPS. In 19 games since returning to AAA: 87 PA, .385/.425/.564, .989 OPS. Still want them to bring him up now.

Players called up from AAA Worcester since Sunday (Anthony, Story, and Gasper) have produced most of the Red Sox total bases since then (38 out of 72). And that's without Gasper playing on Sunday.

That would seem to put Monasterio at second base, but I'd like to see Monasterio and Romy Gonzalez swap places. Monasterio's bat went cold 3 weeks ago (.427 OPS in 20 games since August 9). Romy's got a hot bat now (.897 OPS in 15 games since being sent to AAA). (2/3)

Now that Willson Contreras is getting a break, I'd like the Red Sox to give Caleb Durbin one, too. He's hitting only .205/.311/.205 over his last 12 games, for a .516 OPS. I think the rest will do him good. Sogard looks like the best candidate defensively to fill in for him. (1/3)
