The Red Sox offseason mantra should be this: it is better to tank in July and dominate in September than it is to dominate in July and tank in September. They need to figure out how to have late-season success if they're going to go anywhere in the playoffs next year.

Now that the Red Sox have been eliminated, TNT should consider adding Payton Tolle to their on-air team for the broadcast of the Rays-Yankees series. He may not be great or polished at it, but he sure would be a lot more interesting to listen to than Rizzo.

Andruw Monasterio has been by far the worst hitter in the majors over the last month of the season. And his defense is poor. The Red Sox keeping him on this roster and Romy Gonzalez's very good bat and good 1B defense in AAA/taxi squad is baffling to me.

Here's my Red Sox starting 9 for the playoffs: C: Rutschman IF: Durbin, Story, Gonzalez, and Contreras if able (otherwise Sogard at 2B and Gonzalez at 1B) OF/DH: Duran, Rafaela, Abreu, Anthony (in the chart, red is above average, blue below)

Gasper, Jones, and Monasterio all enjoyed multi-week hot streaks at the plate in the second half of 2026, but they've all gone cold now. Romy Gonzalez has had much more consistent production at the plate these past 2 years, and should be preferred over all these guys.

The Red Sox best 3 players lately have been Caleb Durbin, Jarren Duran, and Adley Rutchman. Yes, that's right, Jarren Duran. (in the chart, red is above average, blue below) Wilyer Abreu should have Sunday off, for 3 straight days of rest - the kind of rest that's turned his bat hot in the past.

Gasper is out. Contreras is out. No reason left for the Red Sox to not bring up Romy Gonzalez. Put him at first base - it's his best defensive position, and he's actually pretty good there. If he's not too rusty from inaction this past week, he could really boost this somewhat stagnant offense.

Looks like there's one way for the Red Sox to end up as the third wildcard instead of the second. That's getting swept in 3 games by the Cubs, the White Sox sweeping the Rockies, and the Guardians taking 2 of 3 from KC, leaving all 3 teams tied.

Patrick Sandoval - 40 pitches in that first inning, and a heck of a lot of those were uncompetitive. Looks like they're gonna ride with him until he reaches his pitch count, regardless of outcome.

The Red Sox clinch a playoff berth with a win tomorrow. Or with an Astros loss. Or with a Rangers loss. Anyone giving you a more convoluted scenario for this has it wrong. (And that happened a lot yesterday.)

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
In NESN's pregame show for today's Red Sox game, they said the Red Sox clinch today if the Sox win and the Blue Jays beat the Rangers. This is incorrect. The Red Sox hold the tiebreaker over the Rangers, and a Red Sox win would clinch the tie, and thus the wild card spot.

Tomisphere @tomisphere.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
A win today gets the Red Sox into the playoffs. They cannot "back in" to the playoffs despite a loss today, because that would only happen if both the Blue Jays and the Rangers lost today, and those two teams are playing each other today.

The winner of next week's 3-game Red Sox/Guardians series takes the season tiebreaker between these teams. It's a simple criterion with a very complex explanation. An explanation I give you here: baseballsphere.com/2026/09/17/t...

NESN broadcasters keep saying that the Red Sox magic number is based on where they and the Blue Jays are in the standings. This is incorrect. The Blue Jays ending up behind the Red Sox in the standings doesn't guarantee that the Red Sox get a playoff spot. (1/2)

Romy Gonzalez was pulled from a game a week ago Tuesday with an injury that nobody ever explained. He finally returns a week later, and doesn't miss a beat, with a double and a walk. Over his last 7 games: 14-for-26, 3 doubles, 2 HR .538/.567/.885 slash line 1.451 OPS Call him up!

If the Red Sox win 5 of their remaining 12 games, they are in the playoffs (in a wild card spot). If they win just 4 of their remaining 12 games, there's a 99.99999924% chance they'll make the playoffs. I think they can pull this off.

If the Red Sox go 6-and-7 the rest of the way, then the Blue Jays, White Sox, & Guardians would all have to go undefeated for the Red Sox to be knocked out of the playoffs, except for the 3 games the White Sox and Guardians play against each other, in which the White Sox would have to win exactly 2.

Romy González in his last 5 games for the AAA Red Sox: 13-for-22 with 2 HR, 2 doubles, a walk, and a stolen base, for a 1.538 OPS. In 19 games since returning to AAA: 87 PA, .385/.425/.564, .989 OPS. Still want them to bring him up now.

Players called up from AAA Worcester since Sunday (Anthony, Story, and Gasper) have produced most of the Red Sox total bases since then (38 out of 72). And that's without Gasper playing on Sunday.

Now that Willson Contreras is getting a break, I'd like the Red Sox to give Caleb Durbin one, too. He's hitting only .205/.311/.205 over his last 12 games, for a .516 OPS. I think the rest will do him good. Sogard looks like the best candidate defensively to fill in for him. (1/3)

I think all of us Red Sox fans have have to evaluate whether we've been mistaking "He's-playing-through-injury" Trevor Story for "He's-over-the-hill" Trevor Story. I'm glad he stopped playing though injury, because "He's-playing-healthy" Trevor Story looks pretty darn good.

I get the feeling that Durbin and Contreras are tired, and beat up. Just don't seem to be getting it done lately. I hope they can give each of them a long break, at least 3 days, to recover and prepare for playoff games. Rafaela and Abreu have played a lot, too, and may need a similar treatment.

The huge implications of this coming 4-game series between the Red Sox and Yankees. A split means the Red Sox need only gain 2 games on the Yankees over the remaining 25, to take the top wild card spot. Lose just 1 more game than that, and they need to gain 5. Gaining 2 is likely; gaining 5 is not.

I love that Nick Sogard started at all 4 infield positions in as many games for the Red Sox this week. Just such a useful guy to have on the roster, especially with guys like Durbin and Contreras needing rest at this deep part of the season.

There was a book I read as a kid called "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers". I remember it because it was the first novel I read cover to cover. I couldn't put it down. I thought of that book's title as I watched Mickey Gasper hitting in the 6th inning for the Red Sox last night.

The bottom third of the order (Duran, Gasper, Seigler, and pinch runner White) got it done for the Red Sox tonight, going 5-for-9 with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 walks, 1 SO, 2 RBI, 3 runs in a 4-2 win. (The rest of the lineup: 4-for-27, 1 double, 1 walk, 6 SO, 1 RBI, 1 run.)

Last year, Nick Sogard of the Red Sox looked like an average big-league player in every aspect but power, of which he had none, but with a great plate approach and reliable, full-effort, high-baseball-IQ play. I saw him as a solid, likeable backup player, nothing more. (1/3)

I like how the Red Sox third baseman situation has resolved. Right now I'd rather have Caleb Durbin than the other two guys. Yes, they're a bit ahead of Durbin on offense, but recall that Durbin had a 33 wRC+ in late May. Since working with Gradum GSwing on his offensive approach at that time, (1/2)

After I saw Eli White producing tonight for the Red Sox, with nothing lost on defense, and putting the ball in play each time he was up, it felt like for the first time in a while, the Sox didn't have a hole in this lineup. That felt good. White notched the game-winning RBI, too.
