Wonder how much time has to pass before ‘The Makerfield Test’ becomes obscure enough to be a viable band name. 10 years?

Really interesting to see the booze ban debate flare up again today. The argument I keep seeing come up is that people (reasonably) don’t want idiots covering them with beer every time a goal goes in. When I wrote this piece back in 2014, I barely remember this coming up as an issue.

Banning football fans from drinking alcohol in sight of the pitch is unfair
People are free to consume alcohol at cricket and rugby matches so why should they be threatened with arrest for drinking at football stadiums?

That’s such a wonderfully taken goal from JDS. The guy just keeps stepping up. #pusb

3 points from that opening 5 games is also a pretty fair return based on performances. Our points return prior to this has felt pretty harsh relative to some of our spells of play. #pusb

Kind of love this lineup. Just want Gboho/Cherif/Yirenkyi/Hamer to do a madness and make themselves undroppable for Forest. #pusb

Haven‘t been able to watch the game today. Any insight into what (the hell) is going on? On scoreline alone, this is totally unacceptable. Wasn’t panicking before, but I‘m starting to! #pusb

That was an absolutely cracking performance. Really strong in the second half and so much more confident and defensively solid than against Arsenal. #pusb

The speed of 'the narrative' in the Premier League is genuinely exhausting. I thought we'd relegated this lot *checks notes* a fortnight ago?

Right, you've annoyed me enough already. I'll bite. Two games into a league season is information, not a trend.

The concept of Anthony Martial has completely thrown me off. In my mind, he’s about 45 and played alongside people like Ji-sung Park and Dimitar Berbatov. Now I‘m hearing he only turned 30 in December and was a Manchester United player as recently as 2024.

TV producers - you don't have to show David Beckham at every sporting event he attends. We know what he looks like. We know he is a freeloader. It adds nothing to our enjoyment of the event.

By the way, Arsenal was only our 2nd defeat in all comps since January 31st. As well as the hysterical PL discourse, we have a fanbase that has largely forgotten what it‘s like to lose (let‘s be honest, some know nothing else). Navigating that will be a challenge this season, for sure. #pusb

One of the interesting things about being back in the Premier League is observing the breakneck speed at which opinion forms and collapses. A week ago Cov were widely seen as the most likely of the promoted trio to stay up, now you sense question marks or backtracking. #pusb

6.5m for Ben Sheaf with 10 months remaining on his contract would be sensational business. In his prime he was irreplaceable, but that hasn't been the case for a long time now. I was almost resigned to his career with us quietly tailing off and losing him on a free next summer. #pusb

Don’t want to get carried away, but Matt Grimes is as close to my ideal signing as we could have made in this window. Vast Championship experience, dependable, a leader, a role model, statistics stack up, midfield was somewhat short.

Normally I don’t like to see the demise of any sports club for the sake of its fans and role in the local community, but since this gross entity has no local community, I’ll make an exception. Disgusting club that should never have had anything to do with Coventry. Good riddance. #pusb

It became clear to me a while ago that continuing to use X was morally indefensible. With the latest nonsense from Meta, the same more or less applies to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads (lol). The whole surveillance capitalism model was already deeply uncomfortable.

Most frustrating thing with us this season is it’s the same issues recurring week in week out. No leadership, careless defending, no creativity, ineffective strikers. Minimal signs of improvement (under Robins or Lampard) and it’s just boring to talk about at this point. #pusb

Embarrassing from us today. Ultimately Doug King has to take responsibility for where the club is right now. He’s placed himself right at the heart of things and we look an absolute state, from the GKs and defence to overall recruitment and coaching. #pusb

I don't know why specifically this winds me up so much, but the manufactured/idiotic rage around the TIME Person of the Year has tipped me over the edge. The ignorance, the leaping to conclusions, the inability to do basic research, the moral righteousness.

The standard of our defence (inc. GK) since, I guess McFadzean’s departure, has hamstrung us so much. Lineup never settled, sloppy errors inevitable, negligible leadership. You can’t meaningfully compete if you’re consistently having to score 2-3 in order to pick up points. #pusb
