Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The new academic year is finally underway at Stanford. Here's a real-time photo of me as I discuss the need for—and feasibility of—preregistering quasi-experimental studies. More here: tom-dee.github.io/files/QED_Pr... 1234

Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 16/04/2026I'm pleased to be in DC today to speak at a congressional briefing on safe and supportive school environments and particularly to underscore the research on how recent immigration raids are influencing students and schools. 020
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 25/03/2026Yes. A *highly* controversial 2014 reform effectively required all students to wait until 9th grade to take Algebra with the reasoning based on equity concerns and claims about the deleterious effects of acceleration. The results were as you might expect (tom-dee.github.io/files/ER_202...). 110
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 25/03/2026Students who took Algebra as an additional math class (AMC) experienced substantial learning gains while students at "Algebra for All" sites skipped Math 8 without clear academic harm. 1130
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 17/11/2025Our preregistered study of mental-health co-responders—now out in Nature Human Behaviour (doi.org/10.1038/s415...) —finds positive benefits in terms of significant reductions in psychiatric detentions and future mental-health crises relative to police-only responses. 030
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 04/11/2025The aggressive immigration raids we now see across the nation began 10 months ago in California's Central Valley. Their impact on children, families, and communities is an important & active area of research I'm pleased my study of the initial raid's early impact on students is now out in @pnas.org 12815
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Such a warm, engaging, and informative visit! My thanks to the @annenberginstitute.bsky.social at Brown University for inviting me to give the Annenberg 2025 Distinguished Lecture. 050
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 03/10/2025🚨Do you know a school, system, or network doing amazing work in support of student success in high school, particularly through a continuous-improvement approach? Let's recognize them! Encourage them to apply for the Carnegie Award for Impact (cfdn.at/4o4gp58). Applications due on November 10. 032
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 11/07/2025Thanks for flagging that. There seems to be some agreement on the role of post Great Recession spending declines? 000
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 11/07/2025I'm curious how people view hypotheses about these achievement declines. I incline towards (1) the failure to refine & sustain school accountability & (2) the rise of smart phones & social media. But that's conjectural without better evidence. 300
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 07/06/2025Seen on the streets of Paris today. #EdPolicy is everywhere. 030
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 31/05/2025This provocative, data-infused essay by James Wyckoff — edworkingpapers.com/ai25-1197 — serves as a reminder that fully understanding the declines in student achievement requires us to look well before the COVID-19 pandemic. 62914
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 22/05/2025I was so pleased to cross the Bay today and speak at the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (www.bitss.org) about the need for (and feasibility of) adopting preregistration of studies making causal claims with observational data. #OpenScience 1778
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 11/04/2025Need some good education news? Over the last decade, the number of students taking an AP Computer Science exam more than tripled and that was no accident. In a new @pnas.org study, Daniela Ganelin & I find that roughly two-thirds of this growth can be attributed to the new AP CS Principles course. 1158
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 21/03/2025I just shared this "continuous improvement" toolkit with someone who approached me about how to drive positive change in their school district. This useful product, which is from a recently cancelled Regional Educational Laboratory, is an example of what this Administration is defunding. 053
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 18/02/2025I just walked by the new @stanfordgse.bsky.social building and saw the iconic red roof going into place! I'm also impressed by these workers standing on a pitched roof while casually playing pitch & catch with these heavy tiles. 170

Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 29/01/2025Today's NAEP results—& the apparent role of chronic absenteeism—are unsurprising to any close observer What's curious to me is this evidence-based sense of calamity doesn't really shape broader public sentiment. In fact, satisfaction is rebounding!👇 Is it crisis fatigue? Biases in info & judgment? 2179
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Here's the NCES data. But a clarification on my part: the gap growth was in grade-4 math. At grade 8 there were declines at both the 90th & 10th percentiles. 010
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 21/11/2024And, second, the distribution of test-statistics in some QEDs shows a particularly suspicious distribution of missingness just before statistical significance and bunching at statistical significance (Brodeur et al., 2022) 100
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Multiple “many analyst” studies show a wide variance in results when different research teams answer the same question with the same data. For example, what did 73 different research teams conclude about the impact of immigration on public support for social policies (Breznau et al., 2022, PNAS)? 😳 100
Thomas S. Dee @tomdee.bsky.social · 17/11/2024I regret the loss of what I once valued about Twitter (e.g., professional hive mind, democratized voice, organic humor). But may I offer a more optimistic Truman Show gif for what might be next? #BlueSky 041
