Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 10h… as it should be for all of us, but framing the Bay Area’s inability to meet its housing needs as an attack on my community who are literally fleeing here for a better life is … fucking insane. Also: www.realtor.com/advice/hyper...realtor.comOakland Built Only 14% of Its Housing Goal—And Market-Rate Construction Has Nearly StalledMarket-rate housing construction in Oakland has nearly stopped. The city issued building permits for only 110 market-rate units in all of 2025. 100
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 10h… attacking your neighbors for having a *slightly* worse home building programme than Oakland, rather than applauding us for doing a hell of a work to help refugees from the rest of America, to be startlingly tone deaf and insulting. Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hAlso, if America’s cities were so goddam awful, the people who lived in them would move out. And San Francisco wouldn’t have the second highest property prices in the US, only after Manhattan. The truth is most city dwellers in America have *zero* interest in moving to rural Republican areas. 0162
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hI believe the stat is that 40% of all homeless youth is LGBTQA+ - we’re over-represented 4x+ precisely because assholes in “Real America” throw their own flesh and blood out on the streets or treat them so appallingly they feel they have to run away. 1252
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hThis isn’t actually accurate. Most of the rest of the world follows US politics far far far far far more than Americans follow anywhere else. And they do so because America is insanely powerful and run by the insane. 1121
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hYou are entirely right we need to build more housing, but yelling at us because we are imperfectly taking on the responsibility of looking after refugees from the rest of America seems to me to rather be blaming the wrong damn people. 160
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hLook, no offense, there are very clearly problems in cities like San Francisco with building homes, but it’s a bit rich yelling at us for not looking after queer kids (who we literally *do* look after) and who have been thrown out of their states. 160
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 20hThis is 100% accurate. 100%. San Francisco is a literal destination for kids thrown out by far right parents. Many end up on the street. The good news is they’re among the easiest to help because on the whole they’re not addicts or mentally ill. They’re just desperate for a home. 26515

Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Of course it’s not the only thing we should do, but a good part of campaigning for a better world is showing people the problems with the current world and the words of the people who want to make it worse. 130
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I bring this up because people are endlessly talk about how we shouldn’t draw attention to bad people doing bad things. But that’s what the Stonewall riots were about. That’s what the reaction to Rosa Parks was about. That’s what the anti-apartheid movement was about. 130
Tom Coates @tomcoates.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Every single political movement and fight for civil rights has been built around drawing attention to awful people and awful acts and the fight against them. Amplifying good people will not help us fight against those who want to take our rights. 180
