I wonder how much LLM generated code will lock people into these outdated patterns. Feels like whenever I see vibecoded stuff the syntax is (apart from anything else) quite out of date

I really wanted a Burner but was too small so was given a Striker instead which was like riding a lump of lead

Indian and other cinema traditions have a much easier time with this kind of tonal shift. Nolan is, if nothing else, a rigorously realist 'western' film maker

More websites should start by telling me how well i did something a few weeks back.

Black and white film still. A bunch of men with moustaches (and one woman, sans moustache) wearing 19th century military uniforms, medals, braids etc. studiously attend to a table with a bunch of toy soldiers in formation, a map, and a bottle of russian vodka on it.

Only took me 8 years and 3 copies of Into The Breach but I finally got all the medals. I got close on Steam a few years back but then a cloud saving issue wiped my progress.
Into the Breach screen grabs of the Global & Squad goals. Got them all.

10/10 All new shops should just adapt the old shop's signage like this
Photo of a hanging sign for "Massage Acupuncture 210". The bold san-serif letters are placed one by one diagonally across a square board which previously bore some other logo, the cursive squiggles of which can be made out under the ad-hoc typography of the new business.

... the viking men and british women. I'm not having a go, I just thought it was an interesting example of the way we tend to ascribe transmission of what we might consider masculine/ viking characteristics to male descendants and vice-versa. I know this is the kind of thing i might easily do too

Tom P (official visualizer) @tom.2x2.graphics · 23/07/2026
sure. you can trace maternal lineage via mitochondrial DNA. That study doesn't make any claims about the sex of the descendants though only the original settlers. You said the women are descended from women and the men are descended from viking men. whereas all the people are descended from both ...

Tom P (official visualizer) @tom.2x2.graphics · 23/07/2026
surely men in iceland are also descended from women and women from men? (unless there's something really strange going on in iceland)

My vague recollection of a book I read years ago is the original celtic population of gb got pushed out of what's now england over to wales, which is defended by a bunch of mountains if you're coming from the east so that's where the settlement stopped (as i say, very vague memories though so...)

Just watched Backrooms (its fine). Feels like a film that will have tons of sequels which expand on the "lore" in profoundly stupid ways

Yeah, Le Guin was knocking them out the park right up to (and including) Lavinia. M John Harrison's recent work is IMO his best. Dickens? Eliot? All their best work is in the back half of their career.

Many years ago, when I worked with the graphics team at the BBC news website, we had a folder on the shared drive call "shame" where we'd save all the most ridiculous graphics we'd been asked to make, things like visualizing how many bars of chocolate would weigh the same as a double-decker bus etc.

Need a hotel reservation for a week from the 14th of June? You better believe I'm booking it for the 14th of July! I get my wife to sit next to me when I'm doing any expensive transport/ accommodation booking for this very reason.

specific things that I make it work: very clear objective. players already familiar with tone and "lore". rules for switching characters mid stream when death (inevitably) comes knocking. Very sandboxy play within constrained environment. Simple rules.

Generally I'd really welcome more of this kind of thing. £35 for a couple of evenings entertainment for 4 or 5 people seems like a good deal and the lack of homework/ ongoing commitment for players makes it much easier to get to the table

I got the new Alien RPG starter box a while back which is very like what you describe. I've run it a couple of times and both have been fantastic (albeit very different) experiences. Honestly I think it might be the best way to play the game, certainly feels truest to the fiction.

Playing table top games (boardgames and RPGs) probably nets out at about £30/40 a month for physical products but another £50+ for snacks and drinks whilst playing.

I went to Tintern Abbey a couple of years back and had no idea that's where they'd filmed the video until we got there and clocked it straight away. Weirdly it's not mentioned on any of the official signage.

My impression growing up as metal head in the 90s is that Sabbath and Led Zep were up approaching Beatles/ Stones levels of cultural heft in the states but I never heard them on the radio (exception: Tommy Vance's rock ghetto). Meanwhile New Order were getting to number one with a football song.

Sabbath (and metal in general) have always been much bigger outside the UK whereas I recon Manchester bands have tended to reinforce Manchester's distinct cultural identity with the UK
