It never stops being important that, no matter what the subject, politicians like Farage, Trump & Rubio are entirely untethered from the most basic requirements of honest discourse. They might turn out to be telling the truth sometimes but only ever in the spirit of stopped clocks.

Let's hope the process does not coalesce around the label “mandatory reporting” while lacking its substance. It can do so only by disregarding the weight of empirical evidence. That comes uncomfortably close to discounting evidence because it carries inconvenient consequences viz #climatechange 2/2

The Sally-Anne Bowen case would not have triggered next year’s new duty. The law is illusory: designed to shield statutory authorities from increased referrals. Its model has no precedent among the 82% of countries with mandatory reporting @catneilan.bsky.social

It's quite common. Becoming a parent is frequently the catalyst for disclosure of CSA. Furthermore, the average time it takes before a complainant discloses is c. 28 yrs (IICSA). This newspaper leads on the case. Seventh para indicates some of the impact the abuse had/has on him. archive.ph/9325f

Fyi @suzannezeedyk.bsky.social. Something v. similar seems likely to be recommended in Sco. Neither govts will be enthusiastic abt cross-border divergence, both have underlying challenges of creaking stat svcs and criminal justice system. See earlier posts regarding Sally-Anne Bowen case + new law

Its predecessor relied on 'professional duty' to refer to the Teacher Misconduct Section. Such a duty was merely a professional 'expectation.' It intermittently worked. The current arrangement is similarly reliable. Go well.

An important point and something I'm going to write about in future, in some detail. If you look at s95 (2) of my review, you'll see that despite legislation (SVGA2006) to return a referral to DBS in prescribed circumstances, to stop future employment of professionals, it isn't reliable.

None of the events that brought this case to trial would have been captured by the new Duty to Report law. Had the law been in force, it would have added nothing — and prevented nothing. It's by design, of course - the review provides an insight. 2/2 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
