A reporter asked me what to make of Trump’s approval in a new Gallup poll, and what it meant in historical context and for 2026. Here’s what I said:
Gallup’s poll shows Trump’s approval rating 3 points higher than at this point in 2017. That is not in itself shocking, since Trump’s vote share also rose by 3-4 points between the 2016 and 2024 elections.

What’s notable is that even with this record-best for Trump, he is still underwater, and still worse off than every prior modern president was at this point in their presidency. For example, in my average of polls, Trump has a 47% average approval and 50% average disapproval, for a net rating of -3. By comparison, at this point in 2021, Joe Biden had a +16 net rating, and Barack Obama was at +32. With a negative net rating, Trump did not get the traditional presidential honeymoon. Link to this data: https://gelliottmorris.substack.com/p/data

Looking to 2026, most presidents lose control of the House in their first term. When they are underwater in approval, they have always lost seats. At just 220 seats after the 2024 elections (and several fewer now, because of vacancies), Republicans are unlikely to hold the House, even with Trump’s current better-than-his-first-term rating.
