A child in an Idaho faith-healing family died of a treatable condition. Then another died — and another, and another. Idaho’s child abuse laws contain such broad religious exemptions that authorities didn’t intervene — before or after the deaths.

The opposite of faith is not doubt, it is certainty. Faith is the courage to ask difficult questions and be willing to be changed by the answers in ways that make your world a little bigger and yourself a bit less certain.

Absolutely. I also think it's notable that the areas where the church is growing the fastest are primarily in the global south where prevailing attitudes about gender and sexuality are not exactly progressive. As long as that trend continues, it will further shape institutional priorities.

This is a direct reflection of LDS doctrine. Telling members that they are supposed to "gather Israel" to the US leaves them more accepting of multiculturalism. Explicit anti-LGBT and pro-life teachings/policies being a core feature of Mormonism leaves them more conservative on these issues.

That's fair. In the many wards I've lived in outside Utah, there is definitely more of a close-knit and small town feel, where if you don't show up for a couple weeks, people take notice and will start reaching out before long.

Life-long Latter-day Saints are more White, more college educated, and more Republican than converts. But both are equally conservative. That's an interesting observation. I would guess that converts are far more likely to be immigrants. I wonder how that factors into each of these trends.

I do find it a little surprising that the most outward of the religiosity measures—weekly church attendance—is the only one not significantly higher among Mountain Mormons. I would have guessed social pressure in highly dense Mormon communities would drive that especially higher.

I am fascinated by how regionally concentrated LDS Mormonism remains. Over half of US Latter-day Saints live in the Mountain region of Utah and neighboring states. Nearly a third live in Utah alone. And Mountain Mormons are generally more devout than those living in "the mission field."

Latter-day Saints remain among the most heteropatriarchal of major US religious groups. This despite marked shifts in the past decade. Equal rights for women and queer people remain sticking points that drive a lot of LDS alignment with Republican politics.

Interestingly, while LDS Republicans are more socially liberal on matters of immigration and racial and religious diversity than non-LDS Republicans, they are more conservative on abortion and acceptance of homosexuality. These things might be more connected than one might suppose.

Current Latter-day Saints remain highly conservative and politically Republican. Notable, however, is that where this is least apparent is on matters of immigration and multiculturalism. Given the current administration's loud and violent anti-immigration stance, this is striking.

The increase in racial and ethnic diversity among Latter-day Saints is quite interesting. For some time now, the LDS church has been growing faster abroad than in the US. The increase in immigrant membership seems a logical reflection of that trend. This raises several political questions.

The retention downside is well documented and general to US Christianity at large. This is probably the least surprising observation of the study. While 54% retention is among the best of Christian groups, it also represents a major caveat on official LDS-reported membership numbers.

A deeply fascinating report by @prri.org on demographic trends among Latter-day Saints in the US shows that fewer raised in the faith are retained as adults, whereas more are converts and immigrants. Meanwhile, LDS religiosity is decreasing and more are endorsing socially liberal ideas and policies.

I am seriously so pissed right now. The next 2 weeks in idaho the LDS church is reading a letter across the pulpit telling folks to vote no on Prop 1 in idaho. Which overturns our draconian abortion restrictions thatve led to 37% loss in idaho OBGYNs. The hubris of men.

Yup. And for many who cite it as pivotal in their deconstruction, the CES Letter merely catalyzed the process by allowing them to stop excusing the racism, sexism, queerphobia, and other harmful teachings and policies of the church. Those were the real and ultimate reasons why they left.

Truly, FAIR's half-baked responses were far more damaging to my LDS faith than anything in the CES Letter.

When I read the CES Letter as a faithful Latter-day Saint, it shook me and sent me down a path of research lasting well over a year. That included reading all of FAIR's responses. What broke my faith was that research, not the CES Letter (which makes mistakes). Hardly the Gish gallop they decry.

🐝🐍The Grand Scoobah🔮🧙‍♀️ @tokensandsigns.org · 16/09/2026
Also amused that the weaponized pedantry FAIR and other LDS apologists love to employ—especially against the CES letter—is called a reverse Gish gallop.

It's also a little ironic that LDS apologists are invoking accusations of a Gish gallop when the technique is named after outspoken creationist, Duane Gish. And when LDS debate bros like Jacob Hansen love to use similar techniques in their online debates.

Just because it presents a lot of arguments in a concise format does not make it a Gish gallop if you have unlimited space to respond to each of them, point by point. Which FAIR has. Multiple times. Which makes it weird to claim "Gish gallop" when your own behavior refuses the claim.

Listen, I'm no CES Letter fandog, but calling it a Gish gallop to dismiss it out of hand is just lazy. It's a print document. A Gish gallop is a spoken debate tactic that relies on the constraint of time that simply does not apply when you have all the time and space in the world for your response.

I know for sure that we learned about Afghanistan through a family letter and care package that included a newspaper. And it would have been very shortly before we shipped out, which I remember as mid October. No one in the MTC told us anything except for right before we were to fly overseas.

Huh. I really don't remember this talk at all. I'm pretty sure we would have heard it but it does not register for me. I'm trying to remember when exactly we shipped out from the MTC. I know it was October. I'm thinking now maybe we knew we were at war but not with whom or where? 25 yrs is long ago.

It's apparently anti-Christ now to preach sole reliance on Christ over any earthly authority. A very odd claim by folks who desperately craves acceptance into the club of mainstream Christianity.

Regardless, it didn't register as a new war in Iraq at the time. We also listened to conference in Tagalog when we could, which often meant you didn't catch full nuance of what was being said.

Perhaps you are remembering Hinckley mentioning a fallen soldier in Iraq in April 2003. I don't really remember this talk but I would have watched it. Without more context, I likely would have heard this as still referring to the war in Afghanistan, with one soldier dying in Iraq for some reason. 🤷‍♀️

FWIW, the LDS General Conference Corpus database only shows three mentions of "Afghanistan." One each in the decades of the 1850s (George A. Smith), 1900s (Andrew Jensen), and 2020s (Sharon Eubank). Seems crazy given how long the war lasted that not one contemporary GA mentioned the country by name.

I don't remember that but it could be the case. When I say we learned about the war in Afghanistan through indirect means, I mean that no one at the MTC told us anything. The same member of my district received newspapers smuggled in to him a few times during our two months in Provo.

It still doesn't feel real to me. I have no real point of reference. My experience of it was entirely indirect and filtered through the screen of time or the experience of others. It's like the Vietnam War. I know about it. I've seen footage. I never lived it. Except in this case, I sort of did.

I first watched the news footage in the fall of 2003. Many people say it felt like watching a movie, like it wasn't real. For me, it felt like something that never happened, or only happened to other people in a land and time I never knew. I then put in the DVD for the Fellowship of the Ring.
