I'm sure this is an unpopular take amongst our fans, but I'd take a 100 points deduction, 2-3 year transfer ban, and unprecedented fine right now if it meant we weren't expelled/sent down to League 2. We'd almost certainly bounce right back up after a season.

Totally. I do worry that a lot of City supporters might be leaning too much into the tone of defiance from the higher ups as being anything other than performative for legal purposes. But I'd be happy if I'm wrong and we escape without the worst of sanctions.

If I understood the financial workings of the royal family of an oil state, I'd be a much richer man. But from my reading, it really does seem like if Mansour's people had been more clever in the paper trail we might be ok on that part.

With the trend of teams being quasi state-owned, American billionaires, private equity, etc, how many ownership groups actually like the rules the way they are because it gives them cover for not investing in the team more (and making more profit).

I think this is basically what the Independent Panel found as well. And even though Chelsea could get away with it via different shell companies, I think for a de facto state-owned club this will be almost impossible to prove on appeal for City.

It's both though. They overinflated the value of the sponsorship agreements, and the independent panel found that there was NOT any actual separation between the ownership and the funding mechanism. The rules are/were bullshit, but I think we also pretty clearly broke them and got caught.
