TIDAL is a great alternative to Spotify. They don't run ICE ads or invest in murder drones. Bonus: they pay musicians more fairly! Another bonus: their "shuffle" feature doesn't prioritize content based on advertising algorithms.

We saw Kim's Convenience, the play that the TV show was based on. Really well done. Leans more into the drama side, but still has comedy.

I've been reading the Tangled daily newsletter, which does a good job breaking the story down and showing both sides. I also keep seeing ads for "Grounded" news, but I haven't checked it out in depth.

It's hard to find the signal in all the noise these days. Do you have any recommendations for folks to read?

Ah, thanks. I don't really follow him, but I've heard lots of complaints recently.

My monthly newsletter. This month I compare looking for an agent to the hiring I do at my day job.

Fun article that points out a lot of the things that drive me to blend mystery and thriller plots with sci fi and fantasy settings.

Spent the morning writing the first draft of a novel synopsis. It needs a lot of work, but I've met my day's goal. So now it's time to get back to comp reading. #amwriting

Ah, the dream. I hope you make lots of progress. I'm working to get my query materials ready and researching possible agents to send it to.

I've been bouncing around between cleaning up the few things I noticed when I reread my manuscript and updating my various writing-related sites. Soon I'll have no excuse not to write my synopsis. But wait! I have to write my newsletter! Huzzah!

To create a Website with your own domain? There are lots of ways to do that. Personally, I use Wordpress to host my blog and Ionos to manage the rest of my site and domains. Wordpress probably is enough to get started. Other people use Squarespace, Wix, etc. Many options. wordpress.com

It’s a rainy day here, a vacation day. So I’m doing the only reasonable thing: Introducing my children to The Karate Kid (1984) and The Karate Kid Part II (1986). I almost forgot how great these movies are.

We've had Friday Night Movie Night for years so we can all introduce each other to movies we might not normally watch. Not all have been hits, and some haven't aged well, but overall it's been a great family tradition. Might have to add Karate Kid to the list.

If you enjoy the process of writing, that's all the reason you need. :) but I agree, writing is one activity that many people don't understand why you would do it for pleasure rather than for money.

The kids are back into Magic the Gathering, so I'm back into Magic the Gathering. I bought a pre-made commander deck and fired up MtG Arena to remember how to play.

Oof, opening line is bad: "Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo..." That makes me suspicious that the conclusions have that same bias. I love the @justkeepwriting.bsky.social podcast to learn about other writing traditions.

I've been looking for comps to help in my search for an agent to represent my fantasy/mystery genre blend, and I came across this book. Have you found any more in that zone? I'm still looking for a good trio of comp books. Plus, those are the kind of stories I love to read these days.

Currently reading The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. I'm about halfway through and loving the characters, setting, and plot. High seas action and a bit of magic are a great combination, and I recommend checking it out. www.sachakraborty.com

I'm gearing up to pitch my fantasy/mystery genre blend to agents. First step, finding comp titles. I'm having a challenging time, since I haven't found many mysteries set in fantasy worlds, but I've got a small list to check out. First up: The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett.
