„Quietly” reflects choice of @nytimes to not report this in the tone or volume of scandal. Instructive to contrast with drumbeat coverage of Afghanistan withdrawal. #brokentimes #choices #badchoices

Any consequences at stake here? Do DOJ people just walk away, no one held responsible?

This is an infuriating narrative. Appalling in every sense but one: This young woman at the center was and is relentlessly heroic.

A close look at Fukuyama’s view on human nature, and how liberalism is a technology to contain its destructive impulses. It also critiques blindspots in Fukuyama’s application of his thinking. One of the better essays on the man’s ideas.

This is apparently happening in multiple areas in the capital. The DC board of elections has been made aware of it and have been in touch with the National Guard to address it. It’s no accident.

Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

Something I learned just this week: "only 4% of the world’s women and girls live in the U.S., but the U.S. confines ONE-QUARTER of the world’s incarcerated women and girls." www.prisonpolicy.org/global/women...
a chart from Prison Policy comparing states' incarceration rates of women to the other countries' rates.
it shows about 20 states who incarcerate women at a higher rate than even the most incarceration-friendly countries (el salvador, dem. rep. of congo, thailand). three states - south dakota, montana and idaho - incarcerate women at a higher rate than the country of El Salvador.

i did a little Climate Week postmortem on data centers: co2 emissions are far & away the most alarming part of the buildout. but there hasn't been much of a reckoning beyond climate spaces kind of wondering when it'll enter the larger convo, if at all, and what that may look like

The Data Center Backlash Should Also Be a Climate Reckoning. It Isn’t Yet
Climate groups are latching onto the data center opposition movement, but it remains to be seen if they can get people to care about the facilities’ impact on the atmosphere.

GOP lawmakers don’t have control of Congress, so can’t really lose it—largely irrelevant last 20 months. Not sure change of guard can do much better. I fear public “pox on both your houses” in 2028. Hope I’m wrong, but not sure fury at ballotbox changes things.

"Democrats suck so vote for me. I am a Democrat and I approve this message."
Line graph of "How candidates talk about their own party in ads" for ads run in House, Senate and statewide elections between Aug. 24 to Sept 22 of each election year 2018-2026. Graph show sharp increase in Dems speaking negatively about Dems in ads and attendant decline in speaking positively in 2024. GOP has much less pronounced increase in positive and decline in negative from 2024-2026.

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.
