"the OECD equates 20 points to about one year of learning, which means Ontario’s Grade 10 students are effectively 1.5 years behind in both reading and mathematics versus where the province’s Grade 10 students were back in 2018. This is, to put it plainly, an appalling result."

Watching the students prep for this trip would make your heart melt. Unlike the sportsball crowd, it isn't often that young people in academic competitions get to represent their country in international events. No one relies on sportsball to keep the lights on.

Came across this in my morning reading. These general purpose AIs are what are prompting the doomed economics @doctorow.pluralistic.net describes. Context specific AIs don't need them. Context specific AIs are all that should be running in schools, but that isn't the case.

As *tech*, AI isn't exceptional. It's not exceptionally wicked. It's not exceptionally good. Take away the accompanying, galactic-scale stock-swindle, and we'd call AI's apps "plug-ins" and we'd use them and abuse them in the same way that we've used every other technology: www.normaltech.ai 1/

Local, domain specific #AI could help students in all sorts of ways, but the 'leaders' in #education making decisions about which #AI your child uses grabbed the closest non-domain-specific training, non-structured input pipeline/environmental context injection #edtech & applied them haphazardly.

AI companies are talking nonsense about it becoming smart enough to wipe out humanity - it's all marketing nonsense. How it'll end up killing millions is by burning a hole in the world resource wise so some people have a toy they can play with and a way to get around learning or doing anything.

Tim King @tk1ng.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I've seen AI do amazing things in focused use (adaptive welding robots, medical imaging systems finding cancer & many more). None of these things require AI data centres - what does are public facing AI chatbots and agentic systems. Leave AI where it is genuinely helpful & save the planet.

Tim King @tk1ng.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Obama had a great quote on it. Agentic AI shouldn't be given internet access. It should be illegal. Tickets for users running it and companies providing it. It has been doing real damage for over a year - public awareness only happened with Hugging Face but it's the tip of the iceberg.
