Was also my first formal foray into the Bayesian world. There was simply no way I could've tested these questions otherwise so it was well worth the effort - many thanks to the greats out there who have so much quality & freely accessible content on Bayesian methods

Lots of caveats + limitations here but I'm excited b/c this study used: 1) contextually-relevant assessment of emotional reactivity to stress - it was right after discussions about specific stressors between couples so more ecologically valid, & 2) couples - very few LGBTQ dyadic datasets out there

These findings clarify that internalized stigma predicts unique variance in IPV use over & above emotional reactivity to BOTH general + identity-specific stressors; the pattern of partner effects for identity-specific IPV use means we need more dyadic samples to understand this more fully

Re: identity-specific IPV use - this link was specific to sexual orientation-related discrimination stressors & didn't attenuate when accounting for coping Effects were specific to partners, which means discrepancies in internalized stigma between partners likely a risk factor for IPV use

Re: psych IPV use - this link was specific to general life stressors, though reduced when accounting for effective coping when couples talked about stress together This means teaching couples coping skills might help break links between internalized stigma & IPV use

TJ Sullivan, PhD 🏳️‍🌈 @tjsullivan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
TL;DR: internalized stigma predicted greater emotional reactivity to stress, which in turn accounted for links between internalized stigma & IPV use BUT this process might meaningfully differ depending on type of IPV

🚨 (Another) IPV pub 🚨 to plug :) Internalized stigma has long been theorized to relate to IPV perpetration/use among queer couples, but exactly how remains an open question. I wanted to parse this out more. Lots of findings so go read the paper but some highlights: psycnet.apa.org/record/2027-...

This was a fun lil moment of clinical science at work (we noticed a gap as we wrote up an IRB protocol for a different study) & it was my first foray into the qual world. Super appreciate all the time the experts took to talk with us, too!

Results really call for the fact that we need more explicit, empirically-derived guidelines on this important topic area. On one hand, couples therapy can really help reduce the relationship-related reasons for IPV. On the other, we want to make sure we do offer it when it's ethical

TJ Sullivan, PhD 🏳️‍🌈 @tjsullivan.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Despite the pitfall of clinical judgment, that's what people landed on. Experts spoke to considerable nuance involved here & we coded their overarching recommendations in the study to hopefully help clinicians in informing their IPV assessment practices

Instead of just making stuff up we decided to do a study about what experts think, as this question also comes up in couples therapy a lot. In fact, there's *shockingly* little field-wide consensus about when to exclude a couple from therapy beyond the clear exclusion cases (e.g., power & control)

Been a sec but wanted to share a 🚨 new pub 🚨 from earlier this year! This study stemmed from my grad mentor & I struggling to define how much physical IPV was "too much" to exclude couples from a pilot trial we were cooking up at the time onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Also want to name class/SES here - I grew up rather poor and even low-end academic salaries are still more money than I ever thought possible & I'm sure I'm not the only one (and let's still pay people well)

For me it was impact. I'm a clinical psychologist & want to train good therapists. Several ways to do that + make more money but I didn't sign up to run a business & I strongly dislike marketing 😅 But also turned down a great position that offered me less than my postdoc salary so there is a limit

I'm very excited about this because I'll have a direct hand in training the future mental health work force as a core faculty member in the MA program in Mental Health Counseling. This purpose became crystal clear to me during the past year of upheaval, so I'm really happy to land here

Will have more to say about the dySEM paper (w/ @omarjcamanto.bsky.social )/JOSS another time, but for, now, just struck--similar to doing my first Registered Report--in terms of how much I feel like this approach (not without tradeoffs) is a big improvement in terms of scientific value-allignment
