Climate Desk Live: AI, Energy, and Our Fight for Democracy and a Healthy, Affordable Future
Watch the full recording of Climate Desk Live, the Tishman Environment and Design Center’s 2026 Climate Week keynote event at The New School, presented in collaboration with Mother Jones, Capital B News, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The program opens with a special fireside chat featuring New York City Mayor Mamdani in conversation with Mother Jones correspondent Garrison Hayes, discussing affordability, environmental justice, extreme weather, and what it means to build a city where everyone can thrive. Across three dynamic panel conversations, community leaders, mayors, scientists, researchers, and journalists then examine the collision of hyperscaled disruptive technology, technology, energy, and democracy; the rapid expansion of AI data centers; the legacy of nuclear weapons; the toll of these developments on Indigenous communities, communities of color, and rural areas; and the affordability crisis and what it will take for everyday people to build power and shape real solutions. Together, these conversations ask a larger question: How do communities organize and build power within democratic structures when government and industry leave them behind? 📌 FIRESIDE CHAT The Honorable Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Mayor, New York, NY - https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office Garrison Hayes, Correspondent, Mother Jones - https://www.motherjones.com/ 📌 AI’S HIDDEN TOLL LaTricea Adams, Young, Gifted & Green - https://www.younggiftedgreen.org/ Manish Bapna, Natural Resources Defense Council - https://www.nrdc.org/ The Honorable Kate Gallego, Mayor, Phoenix, AZ - https://www.phoenix.gov/administration/mayor.html 📌 NUCLEAR LEGACY: MAPPING LOCAL IMPACTS Lilly Adams, Co-Creator, U.S. Nuclear Impacts Map Moñeka De Oro, Micronesia Climate Change Alliance - https://www.mccalliance.org/ Leona Morgan, Diné No Nukes - https://www.dinenonukes.org/radiation-monitoring-project/ 📌 POWER IN OUR HANDS: SOLUTIONS FOR AN AFFORDABLE, JUST FUTURE Dr. Ana Isabel Baptista, Tishman Environment & Design Center, The New School - http://www.tishmancenter.org Dr. Gretchen Goldman, Union of Concerned Scientists - https://www.ucs.org/ Bill McKibben, Third Act & 350.org - https://thirdact.org/ - https://350.org/ The Honorable Michelle Wu, Mayor, Boston, MA - https://www.boston.gov/departments/mayors-office/michelle-wu 📌 MODERATED BY Garrison Hayes, Mother Jones - https://www.motherjones.com/ Sharon Weinberger, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists - https://thebulletin.org/ Adam Mahoney, Capital B - https://capitalbnews.org/ 📌 CULTURAL SPOTLIGHT Etienne Charles, Culture Shock Music Inc. - https://www.etiennecharles.com/home Funmi Sofola, Dancer, Culture Shock Music Inc. - https://funmisofola.com/ Russell Hall, Bass - https://www.russellhallbass.com/ Eljon Wardally, Poet - https://eljonwardally.squarespace.com/ 📌 CHANGEMAKER SPONSOR Isabel González Whitaker, AVP, Moms Clean Air Force - https://www.momscleanairforce.org/ Learn more about the Tishman Environment and Design Center - https://tishmancenter.org #climateweeknyc #ClimateDeskLive #ClimateJustice #EnvironmentalJustice #AI #Energy #Democracy #ClimateChange
