A comment on the CH article explaining a councillor’s motion to pause construction on safe bicycle infrastructure that use streets. 👇 Wow, just making stuff up now. Sadly some will believe 2.9 billion is true. 🤦‍♂️

Monthly water bills that are $90 more than today to cover the cost of aging water infrastructure. That's $1k/year.😱 We need real cost of living improvements like building more safe bicycle infra that allows people to save money by using a bicycle to get around the city. 🤷‍♂️ #yycBike #Calgary

Average Calgarian's water bill could be nearly $90 more a month by 2030 | CBC News
Calgarians could see hikes on their water bills for several years to come, as the city recommends annual increases over the next four years to address ongoing infrastructure woes.

He and his constituents want to drive downtown and never see a bike lane take over any asphalt at the expense of any car designated space. When you’re used to privilege, any movement towards equality feels like oppression. 🤷‍♂️

Looks like a councillor of an area which was built in an era where multi-use path were designed-in, wants older areas of Calgary where multi-use paths were not designed-in, to never remove any road surface from car-use. Even if it car use is overbuilt or if that’s what older areas want. 🙄

You can now recycle more in your blue cart! More packaging can now go in your blue cart, including flexible plastic bags and wrappers, foam packaging, aerosols, and tubes. Remember: recycle them empty, clean and loose (unbagged). Learn more at www.calgary.ca/waste/reside...
Infographic announcing that, starting October 1, 2026, new provincial recycling rules allow more packaging to be recycled in blue carts. A large blue recycling cart is shown at the bottom with arrows pointing into it. Examples of newly accepted items are grouped into four categories: flexible plastic bags and wrappers (chip bag, coffee bag, food pouch, snack wrapper), foam packaging (protective foam block, foam egg carton, foam takeout container, meat tray), food and body aerosols (cooking spray, deodorant spray, sunscreen spray, whipped cream can), and tubes (deodorant, hair gel tube, lotion tube, toothpaste).

True. But how about foam meat trays. Apparently those are accepted now and hopefully people will clean or at least rince them otherwise recycling is going to start smelling like compost.

Lots of devices can be used in bicycle infrastructure. It doesn’t mean everyone has to… use a vehicle if required. But let’s not get hung up on it must be a bicycle.

Just look at all the items you can now recycle. Between blue bin and green bin composting, there hardly anything to send to the landfill.

With the additional items now accepted in recycling, my black bin is going to be almost empty every 2 weeks it’s picked up. Could go to monthly garbage pick up.🤷‍♂️ #Calgary

Shingles is not fun! Good on you to get the vaccine. Make sure to get the 2nd dose. I know people who’ve gotten shingles and it’s bad. One person I know got it in their late 40’s. I got vaccinated the month I was eligible. 👍

People driving have never really cared about that crosswalk. Would be great if they raised it like the one at 3 Ave Nw and 9A St Nw.

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It’s “easy” to build bicycle infrastructure, but it’s much more difficult to maintain it. Especially when maintenance budgets are not aligned with wear and tear levels.
020
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I don’t think we can count on technology to solve this problem. Not everyone will be driving vehicles that have a capability. It will take decades before current vehicle vehicles are off the road completely.
110
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It’s “easy” to build something, much harder to change driver behaviour in a system that tests your knowledge when you’ve just exited puberty and never checks again until your 75 or happen to get caught doing something wrong and enforcement chooses to enforce.🤷‍♂️

This 👇 wasn’t an argument, it was building on the discussion by sharing an adjacent but related observation that inhibits progress for bicycling in cities.

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I hear you. I’ve been honked at, excessively at times, on 9A St NW b/c people don’t u see stand or respect that it’s a “single file” street. Drivers think people bicycling should be in the north bound bicycle lane. 🤷‍♂️
110
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Exactly! And when you need to have a death wish to ride in such conditions, what sort of risk profile and resulting behaviour do we expect to see from people who bicycle? Is there any wonder why people think “Cyclist don’t follow any rules”.🤷‍♂️
120
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The political right has framed bicycle infrastructure as expensive. It’s so well entrenched that nobody questions the logic. Even car brained politically centre and left have bought in. This bike lane was a small part of a streetscape project, but carries the full blame of the project’s expense.🤷‍♂️

When communities or individuals post or communicate how things should work as a PSA, they get caught up in “who’s the authority” and “why are you telling me what to do”. Would be great to have Gov step up and inform people. 🤷‍♂️

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Apparently the South walking path on the north side on top of the old berm is going to get redone too at some point so there’s that option. But many will take the side by side and not stick to their side. Built in conflict. 🤷‍♂️
120
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The path is almost entirely in tge same place as before but now it is raised for better drainage and with consideration of the flood wall, especially at west end. I think it’s good overall. Just wish they kept walking and wheeling separated.

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
For many drivers they’ll say “who cares” if less people bicycle, but the trouble is people deciding not to drive today (who bike or bus) will go back to driving when a new driving lane opens. And then drivers are dealing with traffic congestion once again, just bigger congestion. 🤷‍♂️
0131
Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
So when you remove safe bicycle infrastructure you create more vehicle traffic as people don’t stick with bicycling and instead choose driving/transit over riding a bicycle in traffic. 🤷‍♂️

This news item talks about a study that found that lack of safe bicycle infrastructure doesn’t result in more injuries… but thankfully they dove into the details and it’s the same b/c less people ride. In other words, people factor the risk in the mode they choose. #yycBike #yegBike #BikeTO

The challenge with this bike box location is for the past 40 years, since this train was built, this is the de facto place for drivers to wait for the train crossing arms to raise. Everyone waits there. 🤷‍♂️

The pathway here needed to move from multi-use to separate space for walking and wheeling. There had been just too much volume, but I’m not a big fan of the side by side. When they close the south side for overhaul next, the extra capacity on the north side will be helpful.

The only positive thing out of the UCP is their pro passenger rail stance, seemingly thanks to DS’ husband. I say that reluctantly because it’s been nothing but vapourware studies so far. Getting federal support as a strategic project changes things.

Bow River Pathway north side between 14 St and 10 St NW looks to be freshly paved but remains closed from use. The concrete delineator, that separates walking from wheeling, now hard to distinguish from the pavement oil staining. Will it open soon? 🤔 #yycBike

It’s great to have this new bike box painted on the street, but I feel if there isn’t recurrent training for drivers, and PSAs explaining how they work, people driving will never drive properly around them. 🤦‍♂️ #yycBike #Calgary #bikeBox
Driver has vehicle waiting in bike box which is intended for people on bicycles to wait. Proper place to wait as a driver is back at the stop line.

When we must drive 30 min to get groceries at a large warehouse style store, the catchment area is for that store is so huge that the likelihood of seeing someone we know is very low. That type of anonymous experience and the expectation of it being that way has been normalized. 🤷‍♂️

Winter is daunting for many, but if you dress appropriately it’s very manageable in Calgary. It’s best to embrace the environment we live in and get out there! Besides, this super El Niño winter is forecasting things to be warm and dry so it just might be less scary for those afraid of low temps.
