Ok Calgary, let’s help make Almond Croissant become a permanent ice cream flavour at Village Ice Cream. Go buy some this week and tell all your friends! 🍨 #Calgary

If we really cared about creating safe streets, while also preventing wasting City money building things the UCP will rip out, a better approach would be to propose lowering speed limits to 30km/h on all streets designated for bicycle investment like 26 Ave SW. #yycBike #Calgary #yyc

When the UCP threatens to remove safe on-street bicycle infrastructure, it feels pragmatic to stop spending money on something that will be thrown away. Proposing more off-street pathways instead, means areas like Ward 8 that used up their right of ways for cars will get nothing. #yycBike #Calgary
Map of off-street pathways in Ward 8 drawn in red showing very little coverage. Much of it is disconnected. Apple Maps street view of 26 Ave SW showing painted bike lanes. This street has a project underway to convert this to safe separated pathways.

Take 26 Ave SW In Ward 8 for example (drawn in green). An on-street pathway creates a great connection to many homes allowing people to travel to and from the neighborhood by bicycle. If off-street construction was possible, that would be great, but it doesn’t exist.🤷‍♂️ #yycBike #Calgary

When someone from an area with great off-street pathways proposes stopping on-street pathway construction, what they’re really saying is: We don’t want you to have the same thing we have, and we don’t want it b/c we feel it’ll slow us down when we drive through your neighborhood. #yycbike #Calgary

Zooming in on the inner city, off-street pathways are limited to the along the rivers where green space exists. This leaves vast areas with no off-street pathways, meaning the only way to provide safe pathways is to use the street space to create safe bicycle infrastructure. #yyc #yycBike #Calgary
Off-street pathways marked with red lines showing pathways limited primarily to space along the rivers. There is no network of pathways reaching into the neighborhoods.

Zooming in on the off-street pathways in the deep south, you see a connected off-street pathway network. Every home is a short distance from a pathway and you can reach other destinations reasonably well. #Calgary #yycBike #yyc

Calgary has an amazing off-street pathway system with over 1,000km. So when someone proposes to stop building on-street pathways for bicycling and leave that space for cars, it seems doable. Maybe even reasonable… until you take a closer look. #Calgary #yycBike #yyc

Ward 13 off-street pathway map on left, Ward 7 & 8 map on right. Can you spot the difference when a neighborhood has been purpose built to have an off-street pathway network throughout the community? You have a network that puts every home in close distance to the pathway. #Calgary #yycbike

City of Calgary has info about how to drive on streets with bike boxes… but it’s buried deep on the site. I doubt it gets much visibility. 🤷‍♂️

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I hear you. I’ve been honked at, excessively at times, on 9A St NW b/c people don’t u see stand or respect that it’s a “single file” street. Drivers think people bicycling should be in the north bound bicycle lane. 🤷‍♂️

Tiny Beaches @tinybeaches.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The political right has framed bicycle infrastructure as expensive. It’s so well entrenched that nobody questions the logic. Even car brained politically centre and left have bought in. This bike lane was a small part of a streetscape project, but carries the full blame of the project’s expense.🤷‍♂️

Bow River Pathway north side between 14 St and 10 St NW looks to be freshly paved but remains closed from use. The concrete delineator, that separates walking from wheeling, now hard to distinguish from the pavement oil staining. Will it open soon? 🤔 #yycBike

It’s great to have this new bike box painted on the street, but I feel if there isn’t recurrent training for drivers, and PSAs explaining how they work, people driving will never drive properly around them. 🤦‍♂️ #yycBike #Calgary #bikeBox
Driver has vehicle waiting in bike box which is intended for people on bicycles to wait. Proper place to wait as a driver is back at the stop line.

Who in #yycBike world has had a run in with this overgrowth on 5 St SW cycle track heading north after 10 Ave? It takes up half the lane!😬 I’m going to submit a 311. If anyone else can too, maybe it’ll be trimmed this week. 😉

Oh you’re right, RB does say that. His writing style is painful to follow. Honestly if it shuts people up then fine. It won’t cost much as the risk is very low compared to cars… but they should have it for everything else e-powered as well.

Alberta law provides an answer to making Critical Mass rides perfectly legal in terms that law enforcement already understands. Make it a celebration of life event (funeral) and you don’t even need to have the remains of the person present. #yycBike #yegbike

When cities build safe places for people to ride, families will buy cargo bikes and Moms will use them to drop off their kids before going to work. That’s less cars in traffic.👍 Calgary is a bicycling city. 🚲😀 #yycBike #Calgary #yyccc

Calgary’s downtown office vacancy remains high at 30%. In other news, this extra lane on Memorial Drive exiting downtown is almost complete and will help with traffic congestion… that way businesses looking to exit downtown can do so faster? 🙃
