Our phones just went off in the same way they do if there is a tornado on the ground or a derecho is about to hit us for bad air quality. And yes the fire smoke is like a heavy fog here but warning pointedly said it was from CANADIAN wildfires. MN is on fire too, but sure blame Canada.

I returned from a trip to Germany yesterday and while waiting for our luggage everyone’s phone started screaming with a tornado warning. The German’s looked quite alarmed everyone else looked bored in true mid west manner. I assured them that it was a tornado emergency was the one to worry about.

In Europe with my husband attending a conference and listening to all my old friends, melodic blackbirds, cawing carrion crows, gently hooting wood pigeons and LOUD UNHOLY SCREECHING. The fuck. A good day in Ohio, I left my camera in the car, so I got good looks at over a dozen warbler species! And some surprises like an out of range Glossy Ibis. Some of my cell phone shots.

A Blackpoll Warbler. Called that for having a black noggin. He also has wee bright orange legs which aren’t really visible in this terrible picture

A Bay-Breasted Warbler. Bay is a deep reddish colour that is also used to describe horses with a similar colouration. I’m sure ornithologists thought that that was very relatable.

A Prothonotary Warbler, it’s in the shade, so it’s hard to see that it’s so yellow, It looked like someone shoved a yellow light up its ass. I have no fucking clue what Prothonotary means. I did have to teach several people how to say it today.

A Chestnut-nut sided warbler, chestnut being another describer of a reddish brown color. There are a lot of those in nature so they kind of really have to stretch for those terms. It’s hard to see in my crap cell phone picture but these guys have a bright yellow cap like someone spilled some yellow paint on the top of their head or the bird had lost a bet and had to wear a goofy yellow hat.

I’m out by a scrubby field for the peenting hour, like the midnight hour, but cooler. I can hear my buddy and he has gone up twice but I have only seen a silhouette. I don’t know if using a headlamp or flashlight would disturb him. Although the field is beside a brightly lit parking lot.

On my recent trip we wound up being delayed for 6 days because of weather issues. Now my luggage has been delayed for an equal amount of time. Apparently one of our bags is back here the other is supposedly in Copenhagen, although in 6 days time no one has put it on a plane yet.
