I know it's unfathomable today, but the early years of Facebook were really fun! You could organize events with your friends, join goofy groups and share pictures from nights out. Then your mom joined and your boss joined and your local politician joined and it became something else.

I just finished reading a book by an author (not an internet name) whose stuff I binged circa 2012, and god it’s nice to read something that feels so far removed from the discourse of how smart/cultured/“right” I might be because of the fraction of my life that is represented by my enjoying a book.

Twitter was never a very good platform for debate or persuasion even before it became a Nazi roachpit. Brief text snippets are terrible for conveying nuance and the public platform means it's hard to find common ground. It's always been a watercooler for people you generally agree with.
