It was surreal to be on @cnnipr.bsky.social last night talking about the surging politics of housing in Europe. The main point being that when people's most basic needs are not met, governments will pay the price. The solution being: decommodify housing.

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

PhD opportunity at @liser.lu: Housing provision as enjoyment jobs.liser.lu/job/Esch-sur... Part of the @fnr.lu funded C-SOS (Competitiveness within a Safe Operating Space) Doctoral Training Unit, in collaboration with LIST and @uni.lu Deadline: September 18th, 2026 Happy to answer any questions!
This call is to contribute to this DTU through the development of a PhD project on housing provision as enjoyment in the context of the current housing unaffordability crisis. While economic causes are widely researched, less is known of the role played by enjoyment, desire and drive in the development of housing unaffordability. In housing, it is crucial to scrutinize forms of individualistic enjoyment, such as the control over land exercised by landowners, the production of value by property developers, and the domination landlords exercise over tenants. It is also urgent to identify and amplify more collective forms of enjoyment in housing provision, such as the investments driving the development of social housing, cooperative housing or community land trusts – forms of enjoyment that foreground the use value of ‘home’ and collective libidinal investments in housing provision.

To map these forms of individualistic and collective enjoyment, and to uncover how they become socially accepted part of the ‘new normal’ of housing systems, the project can mobilise, among others: historical analysis of elite discourses and legal texts to identify shifts in the social acceptability of certain forms of individualistic or collective housing-related enjoyment; biographical or life-course interviews with property actors centring on the drivers of their actions; analysis of cultural production (literature, art, music, film, etc.), social media discourse or AI-generated text.

If this is a conjuncture marked by escalating crises, provoking growing interest in conjunctural thinking across the critical social sciences and humanities, now's the time to ask... What's the point of conjunctural analysis? New article out in Dialogues in Urban Research: doi.org/10.1177/2754...
With conjunctural approaches to urban research fast proliferating, along with the compounding crises they seek to study, now's the time to ask: what's the point of conjunctural analysis? Its purpose, I argue, is to offer a method for identifying points of condensation of crisis and contradiction within the social totality of planetary colonial capitalism, with a view to providing practical pointers on how to begin to exploit those moments for strategic intervention. This makes conjunctural analysis a distinctive, praxis-oriented mode of historical materialism – understood as an open, relational and holistic critical theory encompassing feminist, postcolonial and ecological perspectives, and alert to multiple social relations of domination, of exploitation and appropriation, notably gender, race and ecology as well as class. What conjunctural analysis adds to the two main methods of historical materialism – one apprehending capital's necessary form; the other capitalism's historical formation – is a more strategic and speculative orientation to social change as this emerges through contestation at pressure points in contradictory social formations, to assist in praxis, in the rearticulation of these formations for emancipatory ends. To that end, I attempt to provide conjunctural analysis with an epistemological grounding in dialectical relations between subjectivity and objectivity, totality and particularity, thought and history, past and future – a means to understand where, how and why to look for the conjuncture. The article concludes with suggestions on what such a vision for conjunctural analysis might mean for urban research through considering urban applications of conjunctural thinking.
