Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL. And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

The other day, @gruber.foo posted a short post about the MagSafe Duo. I've still got mine, and it's a permanent part of my travel kit. The only complaint I have (and it's not much of one) is that the rubbery outer casing material has discolored over time. It’s otherwise in perfect shape.
From left to right: a coiled USB-C Lightning charge cable with a black Velcro tie sits next to a folded MagSafe Duo charger, and the leftmost keys of an Apple wireless keyboard are visible on the right. The MagSafe Duo’s casing is noticeably discolored with age compared to the white Lightning cable and keyboard keys.An unfolded MagSafe Duo charger showing the iPhone and Watch charging pads. The discoloration of the outer materials is in sharp contrast to the white charging pads and keyboard keys.A MagSafe Duo charger with the Watch charging pads flipped up, with an Apple Watch Ultra series 1 on the pad. The Watch has a weathered green Alpine Loop wristband. An Apple Wireless Keyboard is visible on the right.

Billionaire quests for physical immortality seem to be in the periodic upswing in the discussion pool, and thinking about Neuralink I remembered this passage from Iain Banks' Culture novel Excession (Musk of course is a Culture fanboy). This conversation is between the human Ulver Seich and 1/
One of the exhibits which she discovered, towards the end of her wanderings, she did not understand.  It was a little bundle of what looked like thin, glisteningly blue threads, lying in a shallow bowl; a net, like something you'd put on the end of a stick and go fishing for little fish in a stream.  She tried to pick it up; it was impossibly slinky and the material slipped through her fingers like oil; the holes in the net were just too small to put a finger-tip through.  Eventually she had to tip the bowl up and pour the blue mesh into her palm.  It was very light.  Something about it stirred a vague memory in her, but she couldn't recall what it was.  She asked the ship what it was, via her neural lace.

~ That is a neural lace, it informed her. ~ A more exquisite and economical method of torturing creatures such as yourself has yet to be invented.

She gulped, quivered again and nearly dropped the thing. ~ Really? she sent, and tried to sound breezy. ~ Ha.  I'd never really thought of it that way.

~ It is not generally a use much emphasised.

~ I suppose not, she replied, and carefully poured the fluid little device back into its bowl on the table.

A small reminder that even here in south Alabama, good people are doing good things. Even in Alabama, trans rights are human rights. Even in Alabama, lotta folks care about LGBTQ+ people. All y'all that want to write off the South, knock it off. This is part of what you're writing off.

Apropos of nothing (though it's the end of the month, so tomorrow my company generates invoices, as one does), I used to make timesheet memes at work when I was a manager, and this is one of my absolute favorites.
The domino effect meme, with a man wearing khaki slacks and blue shirt kneeling in front of a series of vertical slabs arranged from smallest to largest. The text over the smallest domino reads, "Oh, I guess I need to learn a little SQL to get what I need here." The text over the largest domino reads, 'Being hassled about your timesheets at a consulting firm'

I did a thing recently - I participated in Mobile's C251 course, and learned a ton about the functioning of the city. There's a lot of cool stuff going on in Mobile, but it's up to us as citizens to keep the city on track and accountable. I had a great time, and I'm getting a lot more involved.
A white man (me) with brown hair, greying at the temples, and a beard that is also graying slightly, wearing a blue shirt, standing in front of a background with a repeating City of Mobile logo (a green M above a dark blue flourish), with the text 'COMMUNITY AFFAIRS CITY OF MOBILE, AL'. The man holds a certificate of completion for the city's C251 class.

Pope Leo XIV’s got SOMEONE in a tizzy. This turned up in every mailbox in the area. I wasn’t aware of it before today, but the barest amount of research into it leads me to believe it’ll be a hell of a weird read, and probably frequently veer off into, uh, interesting theological territory.
A book titled, “The Great Controversy”. The cover depicts a stylized US Capitol with a waving American flag mirrored below by a stylized St. Peter’s Basilica with the Papal flag. There is a red bar at the bottom, stating, “Will two former rivals unite?”

I don’t know the author of this edit but it’s brilliant.
A Nancy comic in which Nancy is walking around shouting. The original speech has been replaced with lyrics from Come Together by The Beatles. In the first panel, Nancy, wearing her usual skirt but with a coat and mittens stands in front of a low brick wall with bushes in the background, shouts, “HE WEAR NO SHOESHINE! HE GOT TOE-JAM FOOTBALL!” In the second panel Nancy is walking down a road with part of a house, fence, and bushes in the background. Nancy is shouting, “HE GOT MONKEY FINGER! HE SHOOT COCA-COLA!” In the third panel, Nancy is standing in front if a brick wall shouting, “HE SAY: I KNOW YOU! YOU KNOW ME!” In the fourth panel, Nancy is standing in front of a blank wall, shouting, ONE THING I CAN TELL YOU IS YOU GOT TO BE FREE!”

My wife and I were commenting on the extreme sexual dimorphism in golden orb weavers, and she made a joke about a door to door salesman from eras past asking to speak to the man of the house. I had to sketch it. I will probably go back and re-do it - I’m not super-good but I can improve it.
A (poorly) sketched four-panel comic.

The first panel depicts a man in a hat seen from the shoulders up, standing in a doorway speaking to a very large golden orb weaver spider. He says, “Good morning ma’am. May I please speak to the man of the house?”

The second panel depicts the spider scooting back, and the man’s confusion is evinced by a question mark. The spider’s movement is captioned, “scoot scoot”.

The third panel depicts the man’s head and shoulders against an empty doorway, with a voice coming from below the field of view saying, “Down here, bub.”

The fourth panel depicts the man’s body from the shoulders down, standing in front of a very small golden orb weaver spider, who says, “Down here.”

Taking a moment from my usual Opinion Having to gently remind everyone that having an opinion, take, or reaction to everything isn’t mandatory. It’s absolutely ok to respond to everything. Pick your battles. I have a few things I feel very strongly about, and I have to let other things roll off.
A quote from Marcus Aurelius that reads, “52. You are not compelled to form any opinion about this matter before you, nor to disturb your peace of mind at all.
Things in themselves have no power to extort a verdict from you.”

Beneath the quote, appearing to be stamped in red ink, are the words, “Marcus Aurelius has already released you from the obligation to have a take”
