I did not say there would be any waltzing, and like you I think the Brexiteers were stupid to imagine the EU would agree to just anything. But I simply don't accept that full membership is the only option possible. It's the best one obviously, we agree on that, but it's not the only one.

It's just that you suggested they may refuse to countenance anything other than raw fresh membership with no opt outs. But I don't think that's the case. Because they are friends, they will also come to a reasonable deal. Better than the one I linked, which was just to show the EU does flex on this.

EU to offer single-market access to candidate countries
Economic benefits would be conditional and can be taken away if non-members backslide on democracy or share sensitive tech with unfriendly governments, the plan says.

I think you would be very surprised what becomes possible if the UK decides that it wants to negotiate in good faith at last. The EU is not our enemy and they know it's in everyone's best interests to have us on board if we are serious about it. We do not hold all the cards, but we do hold some.

Iceland and Norway are perfectly viably in the Single Market without being EU members. All options are possible with negotiation. Though obviously full membership with Schengen would be the best one, if it were politically possible.

I had it higher than that for gas in my calcs but it does vary by region

Their fossil fuel fund managers would rather you didn't notice it was only their products that were going up. It suits them to blame "net zero" instead.

In 2022 electricity prices rose almost as much as gas when Russia invaded Ukraine. This time when the US invaded Iran, gas shot up again but because of changes here, electricity increased far less. If you want to get off the volatility shock train, electricity is the place to be.

The link between electricity and gas prices has already begun to break - and the government can take some credit for that... www.nesta.org.uk/blog/the-ene...
Chart showing gas bills rising by 88% and electricity bills by 68% between April and October 2022. And then gas rising by 33% and electricity by 9% between April and October 2026

Worth noting in this prediction the gas price rise is double the electricity one, because it comes from fossil fuel volatility. Households with no gas will see a MUCH smaller jump.

I am a Green member because they align best with my priorities (and always have). But I am prepared to vote for other left-aligned parties if the situation warrants it in a particular election or area to keep the loons out.

Labour would still be acting like a carbon copy of the Tories and putting up with Starmer if it hadn't been for the droves leaving and joining the Greens. It works. I agree with you that voting for a non-viable party is a waste of time, but Greens are now perfectly viable in many constituencies.

Ooh, it's the "final" one is it? Thank goodness for that. I thought you would never give up, but it seems all the reasonable people have to do is win this one and that's it. 👍

The 2024 manifesto did not promise never to implement electoral reform.

Greens not a wasted vote — it's the size of the Green threat that is making Labour consider progressive stuff in the first place, and if Labour doesn't get a majority the Greens could be crucial. But yes feel free to vote tactically according to the situation in your constituency when the time comes

If Burnham goes to the country in 2029 with ready-to-implement proposals on a National Care Service, rejoining the EU and proportional representation, together with something compelling on transport and climate, to be honest it's hard to see him not winning a majority.

It rang no bells for me whatsoever, I'm afraid. And my son is going to a Super League basketball match this afternoon too! Not saying they can't call it that; just saying they need to use the word "rugby" as well. Only football gets to drop that. 🙂

Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 27/09/2026
I had to get several lines into the first paragraph of the article to discover what sport this was. "Super League" could be anything. Only football is well known enough to use phrases like "World Cup" without qualification, sorry.

In particular, a blue Senate could be vital if a Supreme Court Justice dies. But it may need to be 52-48 or more because not quite all Dems can be trusted to vote against whoever is Trump's chosen crackpot.
010
Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 25/09/2026
It was. But sometimes even when something is obvious people deliberately refuse to see it.
000
Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 24/09/2026
Indeed. I think the best expectation for the midterms is not that Congress will do lots of stuff, but that if it's blue it might just stop Trump doing as much while he's still around.

Tactically voting Tory to stop Reform is a bit weird, especially given what the Tories have recently become. I would not vote Tory unless they were literally the leftmost choice available (as of course the centre-right Dems are in America).

Dale is becoming worse than the others. He doesn't seem to be interested in anything but his own entrepreneurial ventures these days. All burning and all drilling, including wood and grass, needs to rapidly reduce and then stop. No ifs, no buts.

If people really want to go at 125 mph, they can take a train.

Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 20/09/2026
How can we reduce demand for petrol, I hear you cry. Well get people onto electric in the medium term, but immediately, the most effective way is probably speed limits. 50 mph uses up to 25% less petrol than 70.

Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 20/09/2026
Never mind the climate for a moment, this is economically illiterate. You reduce the price of something when you want to increase demand for it. Every shop owner knows that. But when supply is restricted, you don't want to increase demand, you need to reduce it. Or the price will go up.

Met Office - weather and climate @metoffice.gov.uk · 17/09/2026
Following quality control checks, a manually operated weather station has been confirmed to have recorded 38.2°C on Thursday the 13th of August, making it the hottest day of 2026. This exceeds the previous maximum temperature of 38.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens on the same day.

The whole idea that things should "only be taxed once" is weird anyway and has never existed as a principle except in the minds of those who want to weaponise it in situations like this.

The Greens are a less well funded, more informal, more locally led operation, without such fancy tools or well paid staff. This is both a great strength and sometimes a weakness.

Really? Worse than measles, or polio, or malaria or ...? It isn't, is it? It's a disease, sure, and it can be a bad one, but so can all the others. Terrible in individual cases, yes. Worth protecting people against, yes. Worth the lockdowns when we had no means of stopping it? Absolutely.

Worrying that even the *Chief Rabbi* doesn't know the difference between his own religion and the nation state of Israel. (Or perhaps more worrying, that he knows perfectly well but chooses to deceive others who may be less well informed.)

The whole point of Covid being a huge deal in 2020 was that humans had no resistance or immunity to it. Now we have a vaccine, so it's just another disease these days. Science is wonderful.

Agreed on the whaling but you can still visit. Those who are in charge of deciding about whaling will not be considering the general tourist figures at all when making any decision (except perhaps for whale watching tours specifically). 🙂

A win without a majority for the far right in east Germany is perhaps a good outcome. Electorates are famously good at blaming the government of the day for every problem regardless of whether they had the power to fix it, and a minority govt won't fix anything, so they may get shot down next time.

Tim Wakeling @timwakeling.co.uk · 01/09/2026
Does that mean it will just fall because of lack of time, or will they cut most of the amendments to push it to the vote?

These people genuinely think that people voting for you gives you a licence to do what you like unless or until they vote you out. And they also think holding someone accountable for crimes is a personal vendetta (because it often is when they do it).

If only there were another island nation that could have told Iceland holding an EU referendum was a bad idea. They are already in Schengen and the single market; they should have just gone ahead and gained the voting power to go with it.

The reduction isn't easy to observe anecdotally because DDs take time to adjust, the saving is usually only 10-20% of the bill, and overall bills have gone up in the last year. To know if they're working, look at your smart meter half hourly readings and see if they go to nearly zero on summer days.
