Following quality control checks, a manually operated weather station has been confirmed to have recorded 38.2°C on Thursday the 13th of August, making it the hottest day of 2026. This exceeds the previous maximum temperature of 38.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens on the same day.

A win without a majority for the far right in east Germany is perhaps a good outcome. Electorates are famously good at blaming the government of the day for every problem regardless of whether they had the power to fix it, and a minority govt won't fix anything, so they may get shot down next time.

Government alerts should be sent to phones when there is an urgent action most people in the alert area need to take. Like fleeing an approaching wildfire. In the latest case, 99.9% have no action to take because they weren't planning to light a fire or BBQ anyway. That is a misuse of the system.

A map of the UK for showing the total rainfall amount for the 1 - 30 July 2026 compared with the average for the full month.
You would normally expect a total of around 97% of average at this point in the month, but the UK is currently tracking its third driest July on record with only 35% of average rainfall.

England and Wales have seen less than 20% of their average rainfall for the month.

A good first step - sends the right signals. Cutting electricity VAT but not gas helps every household (we all have elec; not everyone has gas). Poor households with fan heaters benefit, and heat pumps become more attractive. As an all-electric household, we'll save double this amount.

New House of Lords rules being drawn up for retirement at 80. BBC says new members will be "asked to agree" to retire at 80. For goodness sake, don't make this a pseudo-voluntary thing. Just legally dissolve their peerage automatically on their 80th birthday whether they like it or not.

Tomorrow, price-capped gas prices go up 24%, because of the fossil fuel supply crisis caused by the Iran war. But electricity is only rising by 5%. Why? Because a lot of UK electricity is now generated by renewables rather than gas. Those turbines and solar panels are paying for themselves, folks.

Just discovered that the Affinity design software was bought by Canva in 2024 and is now free. Time to reconsider my Adobe subscription, I think. However, if the creators of Affinity thought selling out to Canva would give them exposure to Canva's customers, they may have been disappointed:

I'm not convinced Restore is about to become the leading far right party but I notice that every time a split happens, some gets left behind. Reform took maybe two thirds of the Tory vote but by no means all of it. Restore, if successful, might take a lot of the Reform vote but again not all.

The rise in energy bills is painful, but is there a hint that the government's clean power 2030 plan is starting to work? Normally when gas prices spike, electricity prices follow. But electricity prices haven't risen nearly as much. Is this a sign of decoupling? www.nesta.org.uk/blog/july-en...

Electricity bills have increased by much less than gas bills in the 2026 energy crisis so far, compared to the 2022 energy crisis, showing gas is setting the marginal price less frequently.

Well boo hoo. Air fares are in general far too low, so I see nothing to worry about here. Already bought our tickets for this summer anyway, so paying for the fuel is the airline's problem not ours. Probably won't fly next year at all.
