(My natural length is the novelette, and my first few pro sales were all novelettes, but with diligent effort I gained the power of relative brevity)

Picking up the science fiction story I started last month and put aside because I wasn't sure how to proceed, and... it might be a banger? In the process of reading over it, I figured out how it middles and ends, too I think I can bring it in under 4,000 words, which is a real rarity for me

Going through some of the old stuff in the “story ideas” folder in my notes app and there are some real promising things in there but also stuff like this
A screenshot of a note that reads:

He Is Resin

Overall though I gotta say, it was heartening to see so many strangers instantly jump in and work together to help her. Most people most of the time are pretty great

He paused and said “Sorry about that.” She smiled and said very levelly “I’m used to it”

A young woman with first responder training assessed her. Then suggested we move her to the curb (MAJOR street, heavy traffic all around us) when some old guy runs up and yells “Don’t move her, don’t touch her!” “I’m a trained first responder, sir. What are your qualifications?” “Oh. Nothing.”

The car had the green light. Just before the woman got loaded in the ambulance she said that she tried to stop but the brakes on her scooter didn’t work. She actually apologized to the driver (another young woman who was understandably very shaken up)

Yesterday afternoon a woman on a rental scooter got hit by a car as I was crossing a major street; I called emergency services and others joined to redirect traffic and hold her hand. It was low speed and she seemed ok once the terror wore off but she cracked her head so who knows Wear helmets!

I usually try to watch at least 31 horror movies in October (some days I miss, some days I watch more than one) so I like it!

The really weird one was in my twenties, asleep in bed with my girlfriend the Feyrie Princess, when the room FILLED with blinding white light for half a minute, like stadium bright Window looked out on woods, no way to get a big truck out there or anything, we saw no signs when we checked

I saw a ghost made of blue smoke in the hallway when I was about 8 years old A translucent woman leaned over me in bed and woke me up before disappearing in my thirties (that inspired my story “A Champion of Nigh-Space”)

Deergirl Chaser. A sad deergirl with antlers stands across from a worried man with goatee and flannel who says "No! Don't cut off your antlers! They're so hot!"

I know I said I was taking another day off but looking at my notes and deciding which story to start on tomorrow isn’t really WORKING right

now that AI is eating programmer jobs what do the snotty jerks say to English majors instead of “learn to code” learn to forage in the fetid ruins learn to sell your vital fluids to billionaires learn to grift

One of my faves too, “The Seven Geases" is one of funniest stories ever and also wonderfully gross

And I think in October I’ll pause the horror novel for a bit and work on some short stories, the idea pile is getting tall again

I’m reading this now and really enjoying it. Combines two things I love (unusual narrative structures and punishingly intricate board games)

Since I switched to writing full time I’ve been observing weekends (yay) but not really taking time off otherwise? So I am boldly declaring that I’m taking THE REST OF THE MONTH (see note) OFF WORK TO READ AND PLAY VIDEOGAMES note: yes I know that’s only two days. Baby steps

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

I've encountered the word "apotropaic" twice in different contexts in the past two days and I assume this is a sign that I should Take Measures

like in theory these are my breakfast for the week. And the upside down CAKE ones are not really muffins, they are cupcakes. But are the banana chocolate chip muffins any LESS like a dessert? Not really by much

wow! though my brain immediately goes: with the tiniest little twist in one direction this could be a queer romance and with a tiny little twist in another it could be survival horror

I had a wonderful time reading and babbling and signing at Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego this weekend! Then I went to the gayborhood and made friends with some queer girls and we drank and chatted into the night A successful journey!

Have I played “Control Resonant”? Sorry…I’m too busy reading the story of a man who “Controls Rocinante”…that’s right, Miguel Cervantes’ immortal tale “Don Quixote de La Mancha”. So you enjoy your strange “Federal Bureau”…I’ll be delighting in the adventures of Sancho Panza and his “Friendly Burro”

Ah, the Hugo is the rocket-shaped one, the Nebula is a good-sized lucite block with sparkles inside and even someone of my rich and varied experience has trouble imagining what fun could be had with that
