Dude I had to delete Threads today just to get away from the Fever fans. Worst supporters of any sporting org I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve been following English football all my life.

Me: “so you’re wicker all the way down?” Wicker Man (no not that one): “yes, except for the eyeballs” Me: “okay, right…” Wicker Man: “And one other organ.” <rustling, crunching, dry sound> Me: “Oh god no.”

When @rachelweber.bsky.social and I saw it we were almost dumbfounded. Still one of the most singular movies I’ve ever seen. I’m not angry that it’s being remade as the original will get more attention, but it does seem a particularly futile choice.

mass layoffs at Pixar despite Toy Story 5 about to cross $1 billion at the box office. there is simply no amount of money that will make corporations happy enough to not upend people’s lives.

This stage of the AI push reminds me of peak cryptocurrency, which was supposed to change everything. I was never afraid of blockchain the technology, I was afraid of the people behind it, and their vision for the future.

Ahem. www.pcgamer.com/games/third-... Ended up quite liking the expansion tbf. The Light Saber is sensational. It was all a harbinger of The End, though.
pcgamer.com
I really don't want to cosplay as Darth Vader in Destiny 2, so I'm even more queasy about the announcement of a whole Star Wars-themed expansion
If lightsabers in Destiny is what keeps Bungie going, I guess I'll suck it up.

New from me: "Being engaged in videogames over the last decade has meant watching a cohort of publisher executives inherit an industry of products, professionals, and consumers they seem to actively resent for failing to produce instant, infinite profits."
pcgamer.com
Does anyone know how to drive this thing?
It's increasingly looking like nobody remembers how videogames work—or cares to.

Some amazing quotes in this article about how Ford replaced hundreds of engineers with AI, which broke a bunch of shit causing billions in damage and forcing them to rehire those people. www.the-independent.com/tech/ford-ai...
“Artificial intelligence is a fantastic tool, but it’s only as good as the information you use to train it,” said Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering.“Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that that would produce a high-quality product.”

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

From my recollection these speeches don’t exist at all in the UK. There’s something fundamentally American about wheeling out a rich business person to lay out supposed home truths. This idea that anyone who’s made money must intrinsically be wise. Because money here is its own justification.

EXACTLY. And now multiply that problem across two hugely expensive franchises, an increasingly skeptical paymaster with buyer’s remorse, and an audience whose lack of trust has been baked in by a decade of self-inflicted disasters. Tough!

The best hypothetical scenario is they *just* make the greatest robots vs runners horde mode and people love it. But it still begs the question: then what? How do you maintain it? That’d obviously be better than the alternative, but you really might has well have put that effort into D2 or 3.

If only there were another example of a mixed diet live service shooter that has found it impossible to keep people happy. Anything warm up-y won’t be compelling to a PvE crowd. Not their job to onboard people for PvP, has to work standalone for that audience - see also Arc’s PvE enjoyers.

I think it’s an obvious thing to try, and I hope it works, but if there’s any developer in gaming that knows how tough it’ll be to keep a pve shooter crowd happy with enough content it ought to be Bungie. Very hard to see how it works long term.

Here's my cinematic hot take: Unless it is *utterly* crucial to the character, don't put the talent in a wig. It's the costume equivalent of the uncanny valley. You can always see it and, as soon as you do, it's all you can look at. This message brought to you by Dafne Keen in Whistle.

DTF St Louis was beautifully acted and well written, but suffered from that thing too much US prestige drama does of just visiting as many indignities and miseries upon its characters, seemingly of the mind that more suffering must = higher art.
