Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. First observed in 2013 as Orange Shirt Day, it is a day for public commemoration, learning and reflection on the history and intergenerational trauma of the Residential School System in Canada.

From @helenbennett.bsky.social, today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BokehBirds - any bird captured with a soft, muted or blurry background. Can't help but share a recent favourite of this puffin captured on the Isle of Staffa. #birds
A puffin stands on a mound of grass with small flowers. The background is a nice blurred bokeh featuring white circles where the light reflects off of the water.

From @atlanticbirding.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Seabirds; any bird found at sea or the coast. Here's an Atlantic Puffin on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. #birds #puffin
A puffin with wings outstretched, standing on rock along the edge of a cliff. The ocean can be seen in the background.

14 bears have been killed by government-endorsed hunters in Alberta. 🐻 We have no idea why. In July 2024, Alberta’s Wildlife Management Responder Network was announced and promoted as a way to “protect Albertans’ lives and livelihoods.” →

From @atlanticbirding.bsky.social, today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Raptors, any bird of prey. So, here's a Great Horned Owl parent leaping out of a nesting cavity, most likely to seek a meal for her youngsters. #birds #owls
A Great Horned Owl with wings above her head begins to launch from a tree hole that was serving as a nesting cavity. One of her fluffy youngsters can be seen behind her.

One of nature's cutest little creatures, this is the Pika. #wildlife #pika

Had a great time doing some photography for Kaleido Fest in Edmonton on the weekend. It's a wonderful celebration of the arts, culture, and community. #yeg #yegarts
An indigenous man dressed in colourful regalia. His face is painted with red on top and his headdress includes porcupine quills. A performer from Cirque Kalabante contorts himself with his body on the ground and his legs pulled over his head and back on the ground in front of him. A woman in a pink dress holds three hula hoops while performing on the street in a festival setting. A giant balloon costume in the shape of a minion.

There are few wildlife experiences that can top seeing a wolf in the wild. #wildlife #wolves
A grey coastal wolf, still wet after just crossing a stream, sits down for a break near a fallen log. She is licking her lips and looking towards the viewer.
