Me: <shook AND annoyed>: WHAT THE F*** is WRONG with you? Child <gleefully>: I don't know, but you raised me. There's a lesson in this somewhere. But I don't know what it is. Yet.

It's 10:30pm, the house is dead quiet, and I'm editing photos at the dining room table. My 19yo grown-ass adult child strolls nonchalantly into the kitchen and lets loose an absolutely EARTH-shaking belch. I swear to God the windows rattled...

...while simultaneously doing everything I can to convince my own squad that no, they can't just go try to blow up the Death Star all by themselves, no matter HOW many womp rats they use to bullseye in their T-16s back home.

Letting go? #sunset #photography #pugetsound #silhouette #pnw #beach
A person, in silhouette, walks along the beach after sunset with a hand outstretched toward the water as if they are dropping sand. A dock (with lights), some pilings are on the left in the distant foreground, and the Olympic Mountains and red clouds of the sunset are in the background.

Hard same. Speaking from first-hand experience I would bet this is probably a lot more impactful on Jane than her kiddo. It wasn't until my senior year that my ADHD caused any problems for ME, although in hindsight I am 100% certain it drove my poor parents up the wall, and I suspect I may be...

No clue, but if either of my parents were still alive, I would first suggest that you ask them, and then I would text them and apologize (again).

...then when another one escaped in 2007, the news talked about the 1991 escape and I will admit I was more than a little surprised to learn it wasn't just my buddies trying to prank me. I certainly ran into plenty of skunks and racoons out there, but no chimpanzees, real or imagined.

Tim Johns @timjohns.com · 19/09/2026
I heard rumor of something similar regarding a cow and a sabot round on either Crittenberger or Lonestar range in 1991. I figured it was just another rumor. To be fair I I totally thought the stories about an escaped chimpanzee running loose at Camp Swift was BS back then too, but...

Same here. And not too long after our second kid got her license, my wife and I both had a couple too many drinks on date night and called kiddo 2 to come pick US up. In hindsight, it occured to us that we should have done that on purpose to show them we were dead serious.

I am not sure where those pilings are, but I take a ton of photos down at the Edmonds (WA, USA) waterfront. I feel like the great light and prolific interesting subject matter here are like some kind of photography cheat code or something.

Bit of an ominous-looking cloud rolls into Seattle just after sunset, taken from the UW ramp on the Burke-Gilman trail near Husky Stadium, just before 8pm Thursday September 10. #wawx #clouds #uw #photography #ominous #fall #sunset
A dark cloud on the left takes up about half of the frame, with the mostly clear sky sunset still relatively well-lit on the right. The photo was taken facing the west. Streetlights line the concrete ramp to the Burke-Gilman trail that curves a bit to the left as it crosses the street below (street below is not visable).

The wildly differing outcomes are all plausible, and humans generally don't do well with uncertainty. I am the self-proclaimed WORLD CHAMPION of tolerating uncertainty, and even I won't deny having an anxious moment or three lately.

I also grew up north of Houston a few years after the film's setting, so I have some nostalgia for it. And if you want to go the OTHER direction, apparently Dark Sky has my cousin working on a rotoscoped version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Tim Johns @timjohns.com · 02/09/2026
My cousin was head of animation for that film. If you want something to take your mind OFF of the Flock cameras, Apollo 10 1/2 has a lighter vibe and similar animation style, and was also written and directed by Richard Linklater.

I bought a Nikon Z50 under similar circumstances. Chose Nikon just because 20+ years prior I shot with a Nikon SLR. I am so happy with the APS-C form factor that I no longer expect to "upgrade" to full frame. I DO wish this Z50 had IBIS, though. The XT-5 looks sweet. Welcome back to the hobby.

And sometimes conviction is enough.

Tim Johns @timjohns.com · 23/08/2026
But if you KNOW you're pretending, it's probably because you already know the customers, the next funding round, or whatever outcome you need to get back to engineering vs. vibing just isn't coming and you've already given up. If you're intending, expecting, or hoping: you've still got conviction!

I'm 90% sure Claude Code with Opus 5 would tell me "PRETEND" is "load-bearing" in this claim -- and to be fair, just replacing "PRETEND" with "expect", "intend" or even "hope" changes the calculus on that "ngmi" outcome considerably, in my experience.
110
Tim Johns @timjohns.com · 23/08/2026
If you look at what it did and go "aw shhheee... why u do me like dis", deploy it to production and PRETEND like you're going to get it fixed but know very well you're not, also likely at a small growing startup, but maybe getting a little desperate, and maybe ngmi.

I'm not sure if the funniest part was that it was 1990 and yet the only cartridge we had was Zelda II, or the fact that we were so loopy from no sleep that when we fell in for return formation our squad leader was worried we were drunk.

In AIT, we had a four day weekend. Three of us didn't have anywhere to go. We technically weren't allowed TVs or video games, but one battle buddy got a TV and another an NES and we played four days straight with almost no sleep. They boxed them up and shipped them home before return formation.

The coral snake story, and the article about his WW II service barely scratches the surface. He was shot down MORE THAN ONCE. When he was like 90 he was arrested for trying to stop the demolition of a building. The stories go on and on and on. They really do NOT make them like this guy anymore.

There used to be a photo of the (clearly dead, a shovel was involved...) coral snake posted in the physics department with the caption "Coral snake bit Gruebel. Guess who died?"

This thread reminded me of one of my physics professors, Dr. Gruebel, who was essentially invincible. www.dailysentinel.com/life_and_ent... He got bitten by a coral snake while working at the SFASU observatory one afternoon. For him it was NO BIG DEAL.

I only know of one friend (and separately, one of my college professors) who actually got a venomous bite, and neither from cottonmouths. Pretty much everyone else I grew up with has a handful of close call stories...although none quite as good as this kid's 😂.

Fair point, but speaking as someone who grew up in Davy Crockett National Forest and as a child found way more cottonmouths in unexpected places* than I can count on all my fingers and toes, this may still qualify as one of the nonstop horrors. *thankfully, never inside my headgear

I did some analysis on this a decade ago for a remote sensing project I was working on and my mind is STILL boggled at the thought that ~1kW/m2 of incident solar radiation is entirely reasonable. That's basically like having a layer of microwave ovens spaced a meter apart from each other.

Same. When my oldest graduated High School, she got a ton of awards for a firefighting academy co-op. At the ceremony, one of the other parents congratulated ME, and I was like dude that's HER -- about the only thing I can take credit for is occasionally giving her gas money so she could GET here.

Sure, behavior modification is like psych (and parenting) 101, but once my kids figured out they actually had some agency, it went from psych 101 to something akin to a post-doc, real quick.

This is a little abstract and I don't have time to list ALL of my specific answers anyway, so I will go with this: Nothing has ever made me doubt my own ability more than trying to get my kids to do stuff they just didn't want to do.

I was already starting to understand that when our second kid was born. Then it was just blatantly obvious. Totally distinct personality from her big sister, even in the womb.

Just another stunning Edmonds waterfront sunset. This place is a cheat code for beauty, and especially with the cool breeze tonight, it was another all-around spectacular summer evening. We are lucky to be alive; we are lucky to be here, now. #edmonds #marina #dock #sunset #boats #photography
Sailboats in their slips at the Edmonds Marina dock just after sunset, with a deep orange glowing sky near the horizon, transitioning to blue. The Olympic Mountain range is in the background, across Puget Sound. There are a few distant wispy clouds out over the Olympics.
