I have a weakness for isometric management games, obscure simulators, irrelevant details of long-dead memory addressing schemes and listening to "The Legend Of Xanadu" more times than is strictly age-appropriate.

The same way Stymie Bold Italic is redolent of 1950s public architecture and Dom Casual screams 1990s small business, one day in the future people are going to pass long-faded signs and go, "oh, Pissfilter Brushstroke, must be from the mid-2020s".

New law is that all flyers for local community events must be made with an ancient copy of Micrografx Draw using only the built-in clip art and NO OTHER TOOLS WHATSOEVER.

22 minutes ago I decided to make a cup of tea. I still don't have a cup of tea, although I now don't know where I put my mug during that process.

Discovered this morning at work that if I leave my Outlook window focused but don't do anything, it will open a Copilot tab, give itself a summarisation task unprompted, and then set off to hallucinate about my email. This is not at all the action of a company which is completely desperate, honest!

I haven't commuted by South West Trains / South Western Railway for a whole decade but when I'm on it I still get to Clapham Junction and glare across at the Southern lines thinking "enemy trains".

I glanced at a bag of bagels and now my brain has come up with the character "Nyc Bagels", presumably some bakery-themed adventurist who was christened Nicholas.

The Microsoft "showing paid Office users a non-dismissible, permanent advert in their title bar thing" has made me realise I'm paying £100 a year for a spreadsheet which now works just fine in Google Sheets and 3-4 things with macros that would probably be doable in something else.

There is much other people will say more eloquently than me, but I would suggest listening to Dolly Parton's original 1973 recording of "I Will Always Love You" to realise how beautiful it is rendered simply and with the occasional imperfection.

When starting a fight in a music room, it is important to angle any keyboard used as an improvised weapon such that it strikes your opponent(s) directly on the key which makes it go "DJ!"

It does amuse me looking back on all my blog posts about it that my three eras of YouTube are: I so desperately want this to be a success. Actually, let's make stuff just for me Well FINE if you won't stop WATCHING it I guess I'll have to make an EFFORT then.

YouTube's announcement of moving the partner requirements from 4,000 watch hours to 8,000 interests me because they're openly stating that it's about reducing the number of people who hit monetised status. Their official statement is "changing habits have made this [in their view] too easy to hit".

I'm becoming frustrated by the increase in assumptions that releasing a hobby project as open source confers upon the author the responsibility to provide dedicated individual support for that project. This, people, is how you end up with no open source hobby projects any more.

Developing in the Microsoft ecosystem after years with Go, I can't believe how much time is wasted on random things unrelated to what you're currently doing breaking because some magic black box intended to hide a detail from you has broken in magic, black box ways with the detail as to why hidden.

For various reasons I have mostly listening to music streamed to Bluetooth speakers over the past couple of weeks. It's nice to be back to the good shit.
A 1974 record turntable and a late 1980s amplifier sitting between two bookcases. To the left, a copy of"Promise Me Delight", a recent Ace Records compilation of Italo Disco and that sort of thing.

Nature is healing.
A normal man, just an innocent man, stands between a giant fox holding a sign saying "protect British wildlife" and the 5,900+ year old leader of the Recyclons from Sigma IX who coincidentally happens to look like a man with a giant bin on his head. This may look bizarre to outsiders, but for us here in the UK, it's Friday.

I have been meaning to type "I had a great time at Retrofest 2026" into this thought dissemination box since at least Monday so let the record show that it was, indeed, a fantastic weekend.

Fired up my old Windows 10 laptop to be greeted by an Out Of Box Experience, two separate popups about the same thing with only a "Remind Me Later" and then a background WIndows process immediately taking 100% of the CPU so anyway one small bit of poking Secure Boot later I have a Linux laptop now.

I've reached the point in the pop history where I have to write about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and if this was a thing anybody cared about (which they don't) and I had not already been cancelled for my opinions on The Doors (which I haven't) I would sure be in trouble when that gets published.

Unexpected bad consequence of being part of some sort of retro scene: people mentioning the age of something that was made in 1982.

Published 1990-1991 into the pop history page and had a realisation: if the next section is 1992-1993 that will be the last one covering a point I was not "present" for as an active consumer of music purchasing my own records.

Microslop have introduced yet another one of those bizarre features I can't imagine anyone ever having asked for, in that if you leave a large Excel spreadsheet open long enough it navigates itself to a completely different part of the spreadsheet while proclaiming, "pick up where you left off!"

I need a proper failure of a video, a good old-fashioned "fewer viewers are choosing to watch this" situation, because otherwise I'm getting dangerously close to believing I might be in some way qualified to give advice on building a very small YouTube channel.

That problem where your off-clock retro programming interferes with your on-clock actual day job and you're sitting there looking at some flags thinking, "yeah, so I can pack those into a single char and mask out the bits I need and..." No Matt! This is not how it works any more!

If the limit of your allyship is your trans friends asking, "please don't watch that, it directly funds legal action to erase people from me from society" then you ought to be wondering if that concept means any more to you than just another profile badge.

Opened YouTube Studio and this is new (to me, at least). You can now restrict who can comment, including optionally how long they have to be subscribed (1 hour/1 day/1 week). Not sure I'd want to enable it but YouTube are definitely playing with the comment settings of late.
The YouTube Studio comments settings. Comments On/Off and Moderation have been there for ages, but there's a new option to choose whether to restrict comments to subscribers and/or members.

I have bought so many SD and CF card readers over the years and yet still am so unable to find any of them when I need one that I'm going to accept as an inherent property of the format that it has a read/write latency of 1-2 days and a cost of £10 every time you need to do it.

I'm not entirely sure this is stable (ask me in another time/mood and I'm fairly sure Richard Burns Rally and/or Dirt 3 would cycle in, and I'm ignoring a lot of ridiculous LAN fun playing 1nsane) but here we go, 9 racing games.
A grid showing the box art for 9 racing games:

Assetto Corsa
Wreckfest
Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 2
TrackMania United Forever
Forza Horizon 4
Some sort of knockoff box for Sir Geoff of Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix
The Need For Speed
Grand Prix Legends
