I have a weakness for isometric management games, obscure simulators, irrelevant details of long-dead memory addressing schemes and listening to "The Legend Of Xanadu" more times than is strictly age-appropriate.

I did it just to see how quickly it went off the rails. www.my9albums.com/s/61v4M69mWb (At least 65% subject to change based on day, mood, weather, and how long since my last caffeinated beverage.)
A grid of nine albums:

Pulp - Different Class
Suede - Dog Man Star
Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action
The Raveonettes - Pretty In Black
The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Passed
A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records
Bob Dylan - Desire
13th Floor Elevators - Bull Of The Woods
The Kinks - Arthur (or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)

A little cheeky given one of the pieces of recent news around this discussion, but here's the version of GTA: San Andreas presented as a hardback guidebook to the in-game cities.
A black hardback book titled "Grand Theft Auto San Andreas City Guides: Los Santos - San Fierro - Las Venturas". It features three slim vertical pictures, each with an in-game screenshot of one of those cities.

Inside (not shown) is a piece of optical media with all of the game files on it. You could be on the dark side of the moon with no radio link to Earth and providing you've got electricity and a DVD drive, still install and play the game. Although with this release version you might have an unacceptably high risk of being exposed to hot coffee.Inside the GTA San Andreas City Guides book. A page showing the in-game map with its squared-off California and Nevada analogues, and descriptions of the cities. It's nicely printed. I mean, really nicely printed for something that wasn't much (any?) more expensive than your standard "plastic case with a 2-page technical supplement tucked inside it" DVD game.

For various reasons I have mostly listening to music streamed to Bluetooth speakers over the past couple of weeks. It's nice to be back to the good shit.
A 1974 record turntable and a late 1980s amplifier sitting between two bookcases. To the left, a copy of"Promise Me Delight", a recent Ace Records compilation of Italo Disco and that sort of thing.

Nature is healing.
A normal man, just an innocent man, stands between a giant fox holding a sign saying "protect British wildlife" and the 5,900+ year old leader of the Recyclons from Sigma IX who coincidentally happens to look like a man with a giant bin on his head. This may look bizarre to outsiders, but for us here in the UK, it's Friday.

Opened YouTube Studio and this is new (to me, at least). You can now restrict who can comment, including optionally how long they have to be subscribed (1 hour/1 day/1 week). Not sure I'd want to enable it but YouTube are definitely playing with the comment settings of late.
The YouTube Studio comments settings. Comments On/Off and Moderation have been there for ages, but there's a new option to choose whether to restrict comments to subscribers and/or members.

The 1976 LP that the merry-go-round music for Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2 is taken from. (This is admittedly probably quite un-random given the intersection of my interests here.)

I'm not entirely sure this is stable (ask me in another time/mood and I'm fairly sure Richard Burns Rally and/or Dirt 3 would cycle in, and I'm ignoring a lot of ridiculous LAN fun playing 1nsane) but here we go, 9 racing games.
A grid showing the box art for 9 racing games:

Assetto Corsa
Wreckfest
Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 2
TrackMania United Forever
Forza Horizon 4
Some sort of knockoff box for Sir Geoff of Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix
The Need For Speed
Grand Prix Legends

Very much not claiming it, making the occasional "doesn't reflect the author's intention unless you can ignore a major penetrating damp situation" joke about it. But then we also keep the books, purchased long ago, in this box:
A box saying "Trans Rights Are Human Rights", which is a correct statement. It contains some sort of book, I guess. Maybe it's about trains, that would be nice.

Had a fantastic time at the Centre for Computing History's Retro Computer Festival yesterday. Naturally I managed to take about 5 photos, one of which is of a freight train, so instead have this courtesy of @yesterzine.bsky.social showing me in my natural habitat.
A picture of me kneeling on the floor playing Geoff Crammond's Revs on the classic combination of a BBC Micro and Microvitec CUB monitor. Somehow I am neither crashing nor spinning out, although this is a practice round and I've set the car up for slight understeer.

I am 0.7% better than you at Tatung Einstein Chuckie Egg :p
A high score table from Chuckie Egg running on a Tatung Einstein. Some say this is the best version. The relevant thing here is player "Timber" has scored 2780 and player "Dudlee" has scored 2760.

I am not sure either of these are good scores.

"we're going to have an adult party, you can stay up as late as you want playing on the computer as long as you stay upstairs and don't disturb us"
The B-side of a Dire Straits single containing "Walk of Life", one of those songs that was near-ubiquitous through the late '80s and into the early '90s. At least, if you had parents of a certain age.

You know how some people take extended breaks from social media for healthy, soul-enriching purposes, often involving the touching of grass and the refreshing feeling of not being exposed to negativity and anger? Oops.
A screenshot showing the rare Factorio achievement "Express delivery", awarded for finishing the game in less than 40 hours. "0.2% of players have this", according to the description, possibly because finishing the game in a mere entire work week requires quite a bit more than that in preparation and practice.

First Pulp record I bought, and latest. I have not spoiled myself by listening to anything other than the advance singles on streaming so it's going to be a proper first listen all the way through on physical media. (Well. One break to flip sides.)
A hand holds up an LP copy of Pulp's latest album "More", and a CD copy of their 1995 album "Different Class". Behind, the "More" LP sits on a 1960s turntable. There is a faded hype sticker on the CD announcing that it includes the singles "Common People", "Mis-Shapes" and "Disco 2000"

My weekend productivity has mostly gone towards adding a variety of drawbar trailers for early 20th century trucks in Timberwolf's UK Road Vehicles. (This might have swallowed less of the weekend had I not forgotten how to avoid consuming all available Action2s when adding trailers)
A screenshot of the game OpenTTD. Three trucks with trailers traverse a snaking road in the middle of the screen. The game purchase menu is open, showing a variety of trucks, each with a variant that has an added trailer. A depot window is open showing some more trucks with trailers attached.

Oh thanks Duolingo, now I have that Miko Mission track in my head.
A screenshot of a Duolingo session asking the user to translate "Paul, quel âge as-tu", the resulting "Paul how old are you" scanning perfectly with the chorus to Miko Mission's 1984 Italo Disco hit "How Old Are You", probably helped by the lack of any visible punctuation.

I suspect the number of people who care about this is 1, including the person writing this alt text, but I guess here we are and at least we got to listen to some Italo Disco along the way.

Well, so much for cleaning out the second singles box so there would be plenty of room for further expansion.

"Why is it taking an age to get through 1984 Matt? Why?" (Also possibly not helped by me having to drop what I was doing and *immediately* order an original 7" copy of "Come Back" by The Mighty Wah!)
A screenshot of a by now way too long website article. Text reading,

That was the battleground of the mid '90s, especially if you were into indie and you had a similarly aged step-sibling who was very much into pop. "Your music sounds like a bunch of people smashing bin lids together because they can't afford actual drums"... "well the only person yours means anything to is the accountant entering sales numbers and cost of material into a spreadsheet". (For reference, actual musical arguments between 13 year olds are not that sophisticated and mostly involve settlements as to where the volume controls can be set on stereo systems in adjacent bedrooms).

Name the official Queen video/TOTP appearance...
A screenshot of text describing an official Queen music video:

Mercury stands awkwardly in a suit, Brian May appears to have been annoyed by someone changing all the settings on his keyboard two minutes before he went on stage, the lights in Roger Taylor's drum corner keep going off like an over-eager motion sensor in a toilet, John Deacon hasn't got the memo about the dress code, and behind all this all a screen displays computer-sequenced lights which are as unrelated to whatever else is going on as they were probably state of the art for [the year].

This morning's workplace soundtrack. The singles from this were decently big hits - Runaway Boys and Rock This Town on the hype sticker were both #9, and Stray Cat Strut would reach #11 in May '81. Some of this might be familiar to those who played Alley Cat.
An LP copy of Stray Cats playing on a Dual 1019 turntable with the sleeve balanced behind it. An orange hype sticker details that it includes "Runaway Boys" and "Rock This Town", which would have been recent chart hits at the point this album was sold in early 1981.

Box gone through. Surprisingly small discard pile although I did allow a lot of forgettable '80s soft rock a free pass on the basis it was in nice condition and had a picture sleeve. Main reasons for rejection are poor condition, duplicates, and that I can't stand Anthony Newley.
A small pile of rejected singles sitting on top of a plastic box. Many are in picture sleeves which look kind of fine here but on closer inspection appear to have been stored in a swamp. On the top is a copy of Anthony Newley's "Strawberry Fair". It is not in a condition worth saving even if it was a less horrible record.

You'd be disappointed if you cracked open a junk shop box of records and *didn't* find it, wouldn't you?

I guess that solves the "where do you hold it without getting your oily fingerprints all over the grooves"? The usual "ah yeah, that's why they released it in a novelty format" applies upon listening, sadly.

What the hell this is a boomer Facebook post in vinyl form. Except it's from 1974 so I guess it's saying the years the boomer Facebook memes claim are so great were actually awful and the 1930s were where it was at? In nice condition so it gets a pass for historical interest.
A Max Bygraves single "Back In My Childhood Days". You can probably guess the lyrical content. B-side is a somewhat more amusing variant "In My Young Man's Days" which does the, "things were so much bette... oh wait, there was a massive war on and it was shit"

Strong results early on. A bit noisy, but "death by Dansette" is the natural state of a '60s pop single in the wild. I have a feeling I've been through this end of the box before. There's a surprising amount of Jam, Elvis Costello and that sort of thing.

I have many jobs to do today and one of them is to go through this box which I'm sure is 90% absolute cack, 7% things which would be okay if they hadn't been totally ruined on cheap music centres, and maybe somewhere in there a thing worth keeping. Wish me luck.

My thing for 2025 is getting back to music discovery the old-fashioned way; reading reviews, following labels, and buying stuff on a whim to see how it turns out. First great discovery is this revivalist indie pop album from Candymouse. I fear I may wear out track five on the B-side.

More "this aged well" from the I-Spy book. Bonus points on younger me so diligently aiding the Michelin company in their mission to track down all the red telephone boxes of the UK.
Another page from the I-Spy book, boldly claiming British Telecom and Mercury are the only people allowed to install phone boxes on the streets today. Today! Mercury could install one outside your house this minute and there's NOTHING you can do to stop them.

There are four photographs of the pinnacle of circa 1990 public utility architecture, although one of Mercury's efforts is a bit in that exciting neo-deco style beloved of Docklands redevelopment project. I have only referred to these as "the condom phones" a little bit.
