NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

I don't really care about royalty or royal stories, or whether we are a monarchy or not at all, but it does seem to me as if Earl Spencer has basically spent a large fraction of his adult life exploiting the death of his sister, and that's a bit grubby.

Two things that are simultaneously true: 1) At some point in the future, true artificial intelligence may prove to be an existential threat to humanity and we ought to take that seriously in the medium to long term 2) In LLMs, the "AI" companies have not developed true artificial intelligence*

You know when you watch a film and at the start there are characters that seem pretty innocuous, and by the end it's revealed that they're really total evil bastards? This pair give off that vibe.

Slightly alarming seeing all the people on here sharing their childhood memories of 25 years ago. I mean I was only just an adult, to be fair, but time man... time.

Not sure I really understand the people who use Bluesky to routinely quote post Twitter posts. Like, wasn't the point of using Bluesky to get away from that quagmire?

Australians will be able to switch off social media algorithms under planned legislation
Firms like Meta, Google and TikTok should face "substantial" penalties if they don't give the option, minister says.

I'm kind of hazy on this, but I'm pretty sure the last time Germany elected fascists it didn't go so well, right?

Farage said he "deplored" anyone wearing masks or balaclavas at public demonstrations. He added: "You should not be allowed to be masked up, balaclava-ed up and go out and protest on the streets of our country. It is wrong at every level." Welcome to your core vote, sonny jim.

"No longer are Reform comfortably leading in all the opinion polls - in some they're not leading at all." I do wonder if Chris Mason understands words sometimes. Since Burnham became leader, Labour lead in roughly twice as many polls as Reform. "Some".

The SNP have spent a large fraction of their 20 years centralising power, and are continuing to do so. I wonder if their voters consider this ironic?

It's kind of wild that, as far as I can see, there's been no polling at all on Scottish Parliament voting intention since the election in May. Totally normal country.

I'm not sure I understand the business model of Starlink (and similar). Like, no one in a city is going to need to use it, surely? The rural market is by definition quite small. Rich military customers maybe?

It annoys me more than is rational that the F1 clock's minute hand hits its mark a second later than it should do. It should be in sync with the second hand, not lagging behind it!

Honestly whichever company does the F1 graphics needs fired. They're pretty useless in terms of at a glance information and frequently buggy. Indefensibly so for something so (relatively speaking) simple.
