Thank you Richard. I have you listed as part of the group for a very short time circa 2002-03 ish under Cath? Does that sound right? People's memories are a bit hazy going back that far, so compiling a history of the group was somewhat challenging! :-)

Having spent much of my own career in the team, it is a privilege to now lead it. My aim is simple: to help ensure the group remains at the forefront of understanding climate processes & feedbacks, and translating that understanding into improved climate projections and advice. The show goes on.

Current colleagues include Mark Webb, Harry Mutton, Philip Brohan, Ben Booth and Mark Ringer, who bring expertise spanning climate processes, historical climate data, machine learning and climate projections. Future breakthroughs will draw on these strengths.

The group has benefited from outstanding leadership over the years, particularly Catherine Senior and Mark Ringer, and from contributions by many exceptional scientists including William Ingram, Yoko Tsushima, Alejandro Bodas-Salcedo, Keith Williams and many others.

The tradition continued through developments such as COSP, leadership of CFMIP, major international assessments of climate sensitivity, and a broad body of work spanning climate processes, model evaluation and climate change.

Even today's discussion of the "pattern effect" can trace intellectual roots back more than 25 years (Senior and Mitchell 2000).

Following these came a flurry of pioneering work on the importance of cloud feedback processes (Mitchell et al 1989), mechanisms of cloud changes (Mitchell & Ingram 1992), and the impact of cloud parameterisation on climate sensitivity (Senior & Mitchell 1993).

The team's roots trace back to the Climate Change Group led by John Mitchell, one of the architects of modern climate modelling. Its scientific lineage includes seminal studies of climate change and climate sensitivity that helped shape the field, including John's 1983 and 1987 classics.

Delighted to have taken on leadership of the Climate Sensitivity & Feedbacks team at the Met Office Hadley Centre. It's a privilege to follow Mark Ringer, under whose leadership the team became internationally recognised. The group also has a remarkable scientific lineage, worth a thread... 🧵

Got a call to visit the work post room as there was a parcel for me… (first time in 10+years!) It was a book, sent to contributing authors I presume, of papers that came out of an ISSI workshop in 2022. It’s easy to forget that journals often still have physical copies… a joy to flick through.

I should clarify our physical model HadGEM will be. It might not be true for our earth system submission to CMIP7 e.g UKESM. One CMIP iteration at a time. CMIP6 we solved the Dec 1st start date annoyance. CMIP7 (partly) the 360 day calendar. Slowly but surely…. What do you want for CMIP8?

I should add a clarification that this might not be true for earth system submission to CMIP7 e.g UKESM. But the physical model HadGEM has moved to Gregorian. Slowly but surely….

Or "two-model model with/without ε" if we're at that level. I agree "εBM" would be nice! Speaking of which, that is probably the most confusing name we have, i.e. "ocean heat uptake efficiency" versus "efficacy of ocean heat uptake". Many have sailed into those rocks...

I think we just say "the two-layer model". That is usually sufficiently from context. But sometimes we insert "two-layer ^energy balance^ model" if required.
