www.bbc.co.uk/weather/arti... I had an early brief on this and ordered a pallet of sandbags for my marginally flood-prone house. They’re easy to obtain in the middle of a drought! This is a good article by the BBC covering some of the global impacts to be expected from such a strong El Niño.

Beautiful skies over Burgh Island this morning.
A photo of two halves. Down the middle is the causeway to Burgh Island at low tide with sea both sides. The two white buildings on the island are the hotel, left and pilchard inn, right. The sky has what looks like a dividing line of cloud down the middle all lined up with the low summit of the island. Scrubby dune plants in foreground Looking out of the square stone window of the huer’s hut on the top of Burgh Island. Turquoise bay and seaside resort beyond. Yesterday marked 70 years since the UK Clean Air Act 1956 - the first national legislation to tackle air pollution, introduced in response to the devastating Great Smog of London in 1952. The graphic below is courtesy of airqualitystripes.info. 🧵 1/5
Alt text: Graphic shows London’s particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) concentrations from 1850 to 2022. Concentrations rose overall up until 1960s and then declined rapidly.

Title says: what do the air quality stripes tell us about London's air quality? Text at bottom of graphic says: for more information visit www.airqualitystripes.info. The graphic highlights the 1952 Great Smog event when air pollution levels were poor. It also mentions the introduction of the UK Clean Air Act. Additionally, it says from the 1960s to 2026 there was increased legislation and a shift to cleaner technologies, leading to improvements in air quality.

The UK June record was duly broken yesterday with 36.1C at Gosport, and it will fall again today. This spell also features high humidity and overnight temperatures. My husband commented with surprise on the dewy grass when he took his breakfast out. Very unusual to have dew points widely over 20C.

I am old enough to remember how extraordinary the 1976 heatwave felt. On the hottest weekend I wore that green velour top and long skirt to a party (the photo is from Feb 76). Fifty years on and a similar event would show much higher temperatures. We expect the record from that June to fall tomorrow

Compared to the widespread red heat warning in July 22, the humidity this time will be higher, increasing risk to health. Looks very likely we will break an all time monthly UK maximum for the second month in a row. Please stay safe and follow advice, and a special plea to take care in cold water.

Feeling chilly after the end of the heatwave? Always worth a look at “Is the UK hot right now?” This is pretty typical nationwide for early June from the most recent 30 year average ending 2020. Every decade we update the average and it gets warmer each time.
