The Prehistoric "Cinema" 🎥 Deep inside 36,000-year-old French caves like Chauvet, artists drew animals with multiple overlapping legs or heads. When lit by the flickering, dancing shadows of ancient fat lamps and torches, these drawings actually appeared to move along the stone contours.

Some archwork, Cappadocia, Turkey #BlueSkyArtShow #Arch #turkiye #archeology #iconography
Image of the interior of a cave church in Turkish Cappadocia. The image is symmetrical with a dome seen above framed by four arches supported by columns. Almost all surfaces are covered by colorful Orthodox Christian icon paintings depicting saint and Old Testament figures, with a little but of abstract decorative painting in the margins. Dominant paint colors are rich blue and maroon red. The eyes of some figures have been chiseled out, a common circumstance in historic iconography in Turkey.

A mosaic showing a scene from the Fourth Crusade. A tall tower of perhaps 5 floors with windows on each level. Conical roof.

Two large figures (not to scale) face a soldier. His image is damaged, but he wears chain mail & carries a shield. His arm is raised, maybe he has a weapon to attack the two figures?

Fabulous fragment of an ancient Egyptian wall relief with three bears and an oil jar. The paint has survived some 4,500 years! Limestone relief from the Pyramid Temple of Sahure, Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, c. 2496-2483 BC. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circa 4,500-year-old limestone relief with some well-preserved paint in places, from the funerary temple of Sahure at Abusir, measuring 39 × 35 × 8.5 cm. It shows three bears (partial view only) and a tall one-handled pottery vessel, across two registers. The upper register at left, shows the two leds and hindquarters of a bear, and at right, a bear’s lowered head, chest, and foreleg, painted mid-brown. The lower register at left shows a tall, dark-reddish-brown pottery vessel with a long neck and single handle, and at right, the lowered head, neck, shoulder, and top of foreleg of a dark-brown bear. The bears wear collars tethered by ropes to looped fixtures in the ground. The fragment comes from a wall scene depicting tributes from the Levant. Bears were not native to Egypt. The bears represented are Syrian brown bears (Ursus arctos syriacus), which were quite common in Levantine mountain regions in antiquity. They were kept as exotic animals in enclosures by Egyptian kings, and also hunted.

Everything old is new again. This #SpoliaSunday we're in #Garbatella, built as a working-class suburban quarter of #Rome in the first part of the C20. Atop the Scuola d'Infanzia, the architect Innocenzo Sabbatini set this #sarcophagus. But all is not as it seems. #AncientBluesky 🏺
INNOCENZO SABBATINI.
SARCOPHAGUS OF THE MUSES, 1927-1931, FROM A C2-C3 CE ORIGINAL. CASA DEI BIMBI, GARBATELLA

Here atop a modern building in the working-class district of Garbatella, a surprising sarcophagus looms over the preschool built by the brilliant young architect Innocenzo Sabbatini. It's a sarcophagus of the Muses, a style popular in the C2 and C3, but it's a cast. The school was built around a C16 nucleus, the villa Sergardi, and the two side wings, of Sabbatini's creation, were inventively decorated with classical imagery. The Muses of this sarcophagus weren't chosen by accident: they represent the Fascist regime's desire to give the empire-building spirit back to the Romans, reminding them of the great culture these little children had inherited. The columns on either side and the lintel were meant to evoke the relaxing otium of a Renaissance villa, where the gardens would be full of grape-bearing pergolas. This preschool is a compendium of the only periods the Fascists admired. But it's also beautiful.
