I just quit reading a cozy mystery mid-way. The heroine apparently solves crime by stomping through crime scenes like a mentally challenged baboon in wellington boots. She called her boyfriend instead of the police (who were ACTUALLY IN SIGHT!) when she found a floating corpse. Can't care whodunnit.

People accused my politically/community-action-involved first wife of "making up" the husband she claimed to have, for the obvious reason that I rarely went to political/community-action events.

Looks like a stink bug. They can swarm en masse and are basically tiny skunks of the insect world. Startling or crushing them releases a nasty aroma. In Maryland, people sometimes collect swarms with a small shop-vac part-filled with water and Dawn to drown them. Discard downwind.

I just looked at the cast list for that one, and hadn't realized it included The Rocketeer.

I always loved the model setwork in the old B&W kaiju movies. At least I think they were B&W. We didn't have color TV when I was a kid.

That sounds like an idea for a song, like a commercial jingle. "Don't be an asshole On my behalf. Don't try to sacrifice That "golden" calf. ...."

Reading @alyssamatesic.bsky.social and Patrick "QueryTracker" McDonald's THE MODERN GUIDE TO QUERYING LITERARY AGENTS... It says a lot of things that I learned on my own, but it ALSO has stuff I never heard, so it was DEFINITELY WORTH BUYING. If you're new to querying, definitely read this book.

My BG story: Weird Al had a BG when I saw him in concert. He appeared mid-show, standing upstage with his back to the audience and wearing a jacket that said "Weird Al". I didn't understand until Al climbed down into the audience. The BG followed him closely, preventing shenanigans.

Interesting contrast to the Lamar pic. It's a photo op. We're supposed* to notice Momoa. "Aquaman's a' comin', Ma!" The suits draw the eye, but also set a perimeter. "Enjoy the view, but this is not an ask-for-hugs-and-autographs event."

"Mongo only pawn in game of life." I wondered why he wasn't dressed in the usual MIB suit, then I realized that suits are paparazzi catnip. By wearing street clothes, the eyes of bystanders are drawn to the man's size, not his role. They may not even notice the celebrity trailing in his wake.

Okay. The phone sync problem has been fixed by the simple (HA!) expedient of burning it to the ground (i.e. a full factory reset) and reloading.

On the other hand, you could invest that same $10K in an exchange-traded fund (ETF). Depending on the fund, you can expect it to pay you about $4000-$5000 over five years. That strikes me as a much better use of money. (I own several ETFs, but advertising them here would be bad form.)

Tiff Hudson @tiffhudson.com · 23/09/2026
And TSLA doesn't even pay dividends, so the only reason to buy it is to hope you can sell it for more later. With $10K, you could buy 26 shares and hope they go up, but at the same time the company would only earn about $140 in the next five years.

Tiff Hudson @tiffhudson.com · 23/09/2026
That's only a hypothesis. A possibility. Far be it from me to suggest that a corrupt individual with plenty of adoring fans would engage in such a deceptive practice.
160
Tiff Hudson @tiffhudson.com · 23/09/2026
What's funny is that tens of millions of TSLA shares are traded every day, but despite the fairy farts, the price doesn't drop down to something reasonable. I suspect something artificial is being done to keep that price up, like shell corps trading shares back and forth at agreed-on rates.
1110
Tiff Hudson @tiffhudson.com · 23/09/2026
A share of TSLA today costs about $379, but the P/E ratio is about 352, which means you can expect that share of stock to earn about five bucks between now and 2031. That's a crap return on investment. The price is held up by fairy farts, fandom, and wishful thinking.

It happens lots of ways, not just stock. E.g., the Beanie Baby craze a while back, with people buying cheap little beanbags (about $1 to manufacture) for $20 because they thought they could sell them later for $50. "If we mortgage the house and spend it on beanie babies, we'll make a fortune."

Tiff Hudson @tiffhudson.com · 23/09/2026
We saw that again in the dot com crash. My colleagues spent the day checking their stocks and watching them go up and up and up, but the mechanism driving that rise wasn't increased value. It was morons buying overpriced stock and betting it would go even higher. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_S...

I all-cap the first appearance of a role (e.g., the SPYMASTER) and capitalize it thereafter (e.g., the Spymaster) to make it easier to spot the intro of each role/archetypal character. I figure this is easier on the synopsis reader than playing a game of "Wait, which one is Decius?"
