Tell Governor Newsom: Sign SB 1414
Voters should choose their representatives—not the other way around. But in San Bernardino County, the Board of Supervisors currently has the final say over the boundaries of the districts from which its own members are elected. Even when officials act in good faith, that creates an unavoidable conflict of interest. Our co-sponsored bill, SB 1414, would put San Bernardino County residents in charge by creating an independent citizens redistricting commission. The commission’s 14 members would all be county residents. They would be screened for conflicts of interest and recent political ties, and county supervisors would not appoint them. The public would also have a meaningful voice. The commission would hold at least seven public hearings before proposing a map—including one in every supervisorial district—and at least three more before adopting the final boundaries. At a time when federal voting-rights protections are being weakened and politicians across the country are manipulating district lines for political advantage, independent redistricting is more important than ever. SB 1414 is one signature away from becoming law. Tell Governor Newsom to sign it today.
