On the quiet side. A bit peculiar. A good companion, in a weird sort of way.

I think it was a reclaiming thing, and then a solidarity/safety-in-numbers thing whereby non-Jewish people (as I'm fairly sure he is) also did them supposedly to confuse Nazis. But this was about 10 years ago and almost no one else still does it

Even when he was a left-winger, he was an... eccentric left-winger. Normalcy is not his thing

Or indeed UKIP, who use this logo. Clearly a more progressive choice than the Greens
UKIP, The New Right, with a Templar cross and a spear logo that look a LOT like Nazi iconography

Same with fitness videos: anything starting “if you…” is guaranteed to be oversimplified at best, probably entirely bullshit, and gets me noping out immediately

Oh, I thought you were younger than that so figured you were just going by the 42!

Are you sure? 1981 was not 42 years ago

It’s a little jarring that there is anything that comes in “apple” and “rabbit” varieties. The apple one looked at first glance like a packet of yoghurts…

Fourteen years would work for 2010-2024, but it definitely sounds like forty rather than fourteen

I’m an ex-member of the Labour Party, wonder if they would give me an article to warn about the danger they pose

The LabourList editor used to be on the advisory group of Sex Matters. So, yeah, that's not a surprise

Half the time they make no sense at all, it’s impossible to tell if they’re being used as “agree/disagree” or “I like/dislike this” or something else. Which is why it’s so bizarre to remove them!

Plus there’s a selection bias. If the group you’re polling is “people who currently support Labour”, yeah, they’re going to be relatively favourable towards the current Labour leader. Otherwise they wouldn’t be in that group. It’s a form of begging the question

If anything, many far-right voters are more amenable to properly left-wing policy than they are to centre-right policy, because they don't really know what they want - but they do know they want to reject the centrist status quo
010
Tom W @thomaswilliams.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
And people are far more complicated than that. There's no one-dimensional left-right axis, or even two-dimensional. Many voters are left-wing about some things and right-wing about others. They're frankly incoherent. They may not always be persuadable, but their priorities and saliency shift

Tom W @thomaswilliams.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think the reason she's going for is that the centre-right provides a buffer against the far-right. But I'm not convinced that's true. It's a model of politics like ice-cream sellers on the beach, where everyone gravitates towards whatever's closest. It gives up on any possibility of persuasion

Q9 is scoring astonishingly low today (4% when I did it) which must just reflect how little people engage with that subject, because if you've ever heard of the answer it's basically unmissable, nothing you can confuse it with

Oh, which ones? I am a big fan of detective novels, even though a lot of them are really, really bad. Which does make the good ones more impressive by contrast - it’s easy to take Christie for granted until you see just how tedious 90% of what came before her was

Nah. It just means her exact birth date isn’t on public record (why would it be?) but her age has been mentioned in an interview or profile at some point. If you know someone was 30 as of a profile dated June 2005, you know they were born in ‘84 or ‘85, but not which

As I understand it - and I admit my knowledge in this area is mostly from The Sting - isn’t this how most classic cons worked, too? You let the mark thing they were going to be getting an edge on some other poor sucker and then, whoops, it’s them after all

Did you ever wonder why it was called Vigil? Because it actually refers to something in the first series but otherwise is a bit abstruse. (See also Red Eye: series 1 takes place on an overnight flight. Series 2 does not 🤷🏻‍♂️)

… if taxes are so punitive they reduce revenues, why would we need to cut spending in order to be able to lower taxes? In the world she’s describing surely by lowering taxes we would be able to increase spending?

I feel like it would be better to just not translate it: it’s a quotation, unless that quote is well known in translation there’s no point in translating it. Like how the film about Edith Piaf was called La Vie en Rose and not Life in Pink
