Russian strikes killed over 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days. Moreover, it has stepped up its hybrid attacks against Europe, both EU Member States and NATO Allies. Suspending sanctions on Russian diesel provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war.

Besides libraries, what are the best stores for ebooks that are DRM-free, or at least easily liberated? Looking to buy a bunch of ebooks to read on my Xteink X4 Pro.

Are you running CrossPoint? My X4 Pro is finally arriving tomorrow just in time for a vacation, and now I'm trying to get everything prepped so I'll have the best possible reading experience 🙂

It's heart-warming to watch tech bros who deny the humanity of many groups of people based on different kinds of bigotry so intent on convincing us that their imaginary friend is human.

🚨 [Token][ization] Paper Alert 🚨 Tokenization is a wildly understudied area of language modeling despite it having effects across all of NLP. Over the past ~8 months, 32 (!) tokenizer researchers put together the most comprehensive survey of the field. Check it out!

The, "Omni-man 'look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power'" meme. Except his face is overlayed with the Rust-Lang logo and the jets are various linters to actually enforce typing within Python.

Hypothetically, is anyone looking to hire someone with a strong background in software engineering, a PhD in AI/ML, multiple years of real-world Rust experience. Additionally, this hypothetical person has experience with CUDA, autonomous drones, and satellite imagery.

My copy of The Nerd Reich by @gilduran.com should be arriving in a couple of days. I can't wait to read it, even though I'm scared my outlook on the future will be even more grim.

All the Rust stuff I do at work is done on a MBP with an M4 Pro, and the compile times can be quite long on semi-fresh builds or with core dependency updates. I'm a bit unsure how the baseline M6 will feel compared to the M4 Pro. Especially if I'll be running containers, etc. in the background.

This will only be for personal projects so I can easily offload stuff I'm not actively working. Yeah, good point about the storage. I can tune that a little bit by disabling debug info and whatnot, and making sure to cargo clean often.

Is it worth getting one of the new base Mac Mini (M6, 16 GiB RAM, 256 GiB SSD) units, or should I bump some specs? I'll mainly be using it for Rust and embedded development. I don't really care about local LLM/agentic coding.

I really wish I didn't have to wait 4-6 months for my Microduck to ship, but it's really awesome so many people have ordered one. I'm expecting there to be a pretty big and vibrant community. Stoked to share my journey! 🦆

I realized after I placed my order that xteink has a referral program. If you've signed up for that, please send me your referral code. I'll email them to see if I can get it applied retroactively 🙂

The only problem with the Microduck from Pollen Robotics (aka. @hf.co) is the extremely long shipping timeframe. I'm not getting mine until sometime next year 😢

I'm going to @rustlab.it again this year! This will be my third year in a row attending my favorite conference ever. I've been lucky enough to attend a lot of dev conferences all over the world, including the very first NDC, but RustLab is my favorite. If you see me there, say hello! 🙂

Does anything like that exists in a paper or as an open source library? Ideally written in Rust to spare me from having to reimplement it.

I'm currently trying to come up with a reasonable design for a kind of "transaction log" or "delta set" for tracking and replaying mutations of system state. Perhaps some kind of combo of a WAL and git commits. We've got a lot of complex state mutations that we want to be able to replay/debug.

Does anyone on here have any experiences to share about the Fairphone, specifically the 6 or 6 plus? I'm growing increasingly eager to disconnect myself from Big Tech, and looking for a phone that I can repair myself. Share both good and bad. Feel free to share other phone recommendations as well.

I'm looking for a really tiny USB-C drive with at least 8 GiB of storage, or at least enough for a functional Tails setup. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've found plenty of USB-A drives, including those pretty cool bracelets. However, I really want USB-C.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Also been thinking something that can be set up for touring (if not made for it). I think it'd be pretty amazing riding around up here during midnight summer season, pitching my tent in beautiful spots, and maybe do a bit of fishing, etc. Got any recommendations?

Any decent SDRs that are capable of receiving and transmitting over UHF, VHF and HF? Ideally I want something portable or at least semi-portable. Full kit is a bonus, but not required; I can provide my own antennas.

Not riding anything now. I moved really, really far north over a decade ago and the riding season is so short and unpredictable here. But I'm still dreaming! Even though seasons are short up here, the roads are pretty good and the scenery is breathtaking.

I wanna do one last startup before I get too old. I've got tons of ideas, but none feel viable long term. I don't want to just start something and then sell out. I wanna nurture something and make it live on long after I retire (30 years from now). Maybe I'll just get go into woodworking instead 🙂

#jj-vcs interoperability with Git continues to be key. The fact that ERSC can swap out the repo storage to not use Git, *and* can have a migration path to a future, better wire protocol than Git's, while preserving compatibility along the way, is amazing!

I'm feeling burned out and disillusioned. I've got so many ideas I want to put out into the world, but I never manage to find the energy to do it. Something needs to change. Ideas are worthless, execution is everything.

I'm glad to see Rust become a "tier 1" language at Microsoft. Personally, I hope this means more folks actively working on the Azure SDK crates. Those crates have come a long way in the past year, which is great, but we're still missing important support like Azure Service Bus.

This is a good point, regarding Google Translate and similar tools. I travelled through China in the early 2000s with a simple list of common phrases to get around, as well as a small picture book with different animals to use at restaurants 😅

I'm all about culture and nature. Art, museums, great authentic food, the "simple" beauty of a mountain peak, a valley, etc. I can find pleasure in cities if I can avoid tourists. I try to avoid the touristy places whenever possible, but I make concessions for museums and galleries.

Brazil is very high on my list of countries to visit, but it's so vast I always fail at making a good plan of where to visit, how much time I need, etc. I also don't speak Portuguese, which I think might be a problem, at least in smaller cities? I avoid typical tourist locations/traps 😅
