Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 14/09/2026This isn't remotely an original observation, but it simply works: the most whacked-out dystopian vision of the near future from 20 years ago wouldn't have had "and Ross Douthat will be the host of 60 Minutes." 070
Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 22/07/2026The only way that I’d get excited about anything that GRRM does anymore is if I was told that I’d won a secret prize to have it read to me by Florence Pugh with my head in her lap, and even then I’d try to convince her to read random passages from Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy instead. 020

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Reminds me of Swan Song by Robert McCammon. The book is mostly Temu The Stand, with nukes rather than the superflu, but the subplot in the beginning with the survival bunker community that was a shoddily built scam was spot on, and sets up the secondary villains quite well. 000
Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 30/06/2026The Culkins are still playing in the only prog rock group in their hometown’s history and still insisting that they can make it happen. The Skarsgårds are still telling the mothership to not vaporize Earth, but Bill always argues for. 010

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 31/03/2026Just another thing in a long list of things that require (or at least compel) one to issue a reflexive disclaimer of “I like [thing], but I’m not a ‘[thing] Guy.’” 030

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Sometimes I wonder how much of the current situation is due to the second-string and below US porn mags deciding that, since Playboy had all the real writers, they were just going to lowball it, and thus exposed millions of teen boys to this stuff. Penthouse would have published Rorschach’s journal. 000

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 13/01/2026It’s startling to remember how _necessary_ the newspapers used to be; the comics were a bonus on top of that. Imagine someone going, “Oh, so you read All the President’s Men? Here’s the latest issue of X-Men.” 051

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 27/12/2025Unfortunately I think that so much of pop culture seems to depend on various types of ancillary fandom phenomena--fanfic, cosplaying, social media saturation, etc.--that someone creating a thing that seems completely sufficient in and of itself just confounds people. 1320

Tom Dennis @thomasadennis.bsky.social · 15/12/2025The amazing thing for me was that Abrams made TROS as basically the precise movie that the outrage grifters claimed to want, and it was horrible, but all that mattered to them was that they got their way.
