NZ's Evening Post #OTD Sep 29 1914 reports on Grimsby trawling fleet, spend months on sea fishing and without radios have no way to contact their home ports. They have no idea #WW1 has started and Navy desperately needs their sailors paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/E... bsky.app/profile/this...
IGNORANT OF THE WAR. There are about 800 boats in the Grimsby trawling fleet, and about half of them are still scattered over the North Sea, ignorant of the fact that Europe is at war. The services of Grhraby fishermen still at sea are needed by the Admiralty. Nearly every trawler carries two or three naval reserve men, and strenuous efforts are being made to get in touch with them. It is necessary that they should return to the H umber or to the nearest port as quickly as possible. The belated news of the European out-Ja-eak is being disseminated over the North Sea by outgoing steamers. Four Scandinavian vessels ventured out to sea at their own risk, and the captains were asked to communicate the news to any trawler they might sight. Fishing and other vessels are being warned not to go out of sight of land or in waters east of the Orkneys, and they are also notified not to sail by night. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19140929.2.71#image-tab

London, Sept. 26.-Correspondents telegraphing today from Amsterdam and dating their dispatches from "France," an expedient resulting from the expulsion of the writers from anywhere near the scene of opera- tions, again dwell on the excellent character of the German entrench- ments. It seems that in many places. along the Aisne battlefront stone. quarries dot the hillside, and a ma- jority of these workings have been in German hands for years. It would appear that during several weeks be- fore the opening of hostilities thou- sands of tons of stone were cut from these quarries, later to be used for the construction, by the Germans, of barriers against which the heaviest artillery has little effect.
An Englishman writing from the Maubeuge district reveals some of the remarkable preparations, which he al- leges were made by the Germans for the present war. This man in his let- ter says:
"The Germans installed a long line. before the war certain portions of some of their big 42 centimeter guns on a farm under the pretext that they were boring for water. They put in foundations of concrete so that every- thing was ready. As their guns had a longer range than those of the Mau- beuge forts, it was not difficult for them to conquer."

American Samuel Franklin Cody toured Europe as a cowboy. Settling in UK he started developing aircraft and became an aviation pioneer setting a number of flight records in the UK. Photo, IWM RAE-O 235, shows him on Cody Aircraft Mark IC #OTD Sep 27 1909 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Franklin_CodyIWM (RAE-O 235) https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205192169

"A medium close up of Cody wearing thick flying clothing aboard Cody aircraft mark IC (Cathedral - so named because of it's size and the size of the hangar it required and the katahedral (lower at the wing tips) arrangement of the wings) with Mrs. Capper. The most important change made with this mark was moving the pilots seat to in front of the engine. This aircraft was altered several more times, here balancing planes have been added between the wings on the rear outer struts. Particularly with his earlier aircraft Cody made constant adjustments to the arrangement of the flying surfaces, often after crashes, in order to obtain better performance and handling. These changes mean that identifying specific sub-marks of Cody aircraft can at times be very difficult, it should also be remembered that because of this constant evolution of his aircraft Cody would probably not have classified them in such a detailed manner. It was in this aircraft that Cody made the first passenger carrying flight in Britain (Colonel Capper on the 14th August 1909) and several record breaking flights including one cross-country of around forty miles and lasting an hour and three minutes, passing over Aldershot, Camberley, Fleet, Farnham and Farnborough on the 8th September 1909. This was the furthest cross-country flight that had ever been made, anywhere in the world and the longest flight in time and distance in the British Empire. Only six other pilots and four types of machine had flown over forty miles anywhere in the world and all of these were aerodrome circuits not cross-country flights."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Franklin_Cody
