as the river settles in for summer moss-covered rocks reveal themselves to the sun again
The Santiam river with clouds above, looking upriver to the east, near Gates, Oregon. Several large moss-covered rocks down low and just to the right. The river is lined on both sides with trees and is reflecting silvery grey under the partly cloudy sky. Mountaintops are visible at the top ☮️

fog over the river with a raptor
8:40 am this morning and fog has begun to lift off the Santiam River while an osprey or an eagle floats slowly westward over the other side of the river. Lots of moss covering the rocks and tree trunk to the left with some dead grass on the right. Trees line both sides of the river and the fog has risen just above most of them and still hides the sun ☮️

We’ve had several storms lately with high winds. So the trails are decorated with epiphytes. So many beautiful pieces of branches covered with lichen, moss, and ferns.
A licorice fern arches across a bed of moss covering a fallen branch. A beach is visible in the background

Took Larry for a walk, hungry hill, Beara peninsula.
Larry, my dog stands on a grassy outcrop overlooking the rugged, sun-drenched scenery of the Beara Peninsula towards Hungry Hill.

half way up the mountain: "there's a bear around here. just saw him." "okay. thanks." (scanning the trees like we're in the middle of A Quiet Place) six of one, half dozen of another at this point. we made it to the river. was it worth it? you be the judge. 🙏

We've had lots & lots & lots of rain lately. (I love rain, but still..) I'm reminding myself how gorgeous Sitka is in the sun.
Eastern channel at low tide, pools of water reflect the snow-capped mountains in the distance, between gravel beds. Small, tree-covered islands are in the mid-distance. The sky is clear and light blue.

The first icing over of the garden wildlife pond will have seen off the last of the Pond Skaters but there will be much life going on beneath it. The now browned senescent Barred Horsetail in the foreground was a favoured perching point for Damsel and Dragonflies over the Spring and Summer.
The frozen surface of a small preformed 250 litre pond dressed with pebbles and dead wood surrounded by an overwintering vegetation mix of naturalised wild and garden cultivar plant stems. The dead stems of Barred Horsetail emergent in the foreground. An unusual visitor to the Horsetail in a suburban garden, Willow Emerald Damselfly. The female oviposits her eggs into the bark of overhanging Willow and Alder of which none is present near this pond. Cooler weather has really brought out the deep hues of this season's very last tomatoes.
A stalled and heavily pruned blueberry cream tomato plant completing its final mission. The tomatoes are small with purple-black hues and a creamy yellow-green. That last part isn't appetizing but I assure you they will be tasty. Princess of gothic tomatoes roughly shaped like fat peppers on a heavily pruned vine. They are a deep purple, almost black. One of my favorite varieties for visuals and taste.

A very grey day, the sky heavy with the threat of rain. This grapefruit sized paper wasp nest has somehow survived the past 2 storms.
A round, silvery grey paper wasp nest hangs from a slender branch. The background is shades of grey with indistinct branches of lighter grey and a few in reddish brown.

Among the most moving encounters I had with wild things during swims from Atana Khasab Hotel on Oman's Musandam Peninsula, was with this majestic Purple Heron. As I got closer, realised it had a brutally broken leg, foot hanging by a 🧵. Seemed to have adapted to its injury. #BirdsSeenIn2025. 🧵1/6

gold in the mountains
A tree has turned autumn gold in the midst of many larger evergreens near the top of this mountain ridge. Looking across the valley there are heavy clouds and rain on the way over the mountain ridge that is the south side of the canyon
