If you follow me online, you've probably seen my daynotes (since I post them... uh, near daily) and my monthly newsletter. I love writing them. Indeed, it's probably my favourite thing to do aside from writing books. So - I've got a bit of news! www.davidgoodman.net/announcing-m...

I love that the image strongly suggests that at some point in their chequered history Bilbo and Gollum solved crimes together, and that Bilbo was the maverick and Gollum did things by the book.

That's incredible, the hard science fiction concepts of "Shroud" and the dark academia of "The Incandescent" feel different all the way down, I can't guess at what generic space you're referencing unless it's something like "monsters in the dark"? I'd love to hear more! Will you be at Worldcon?

I don't have strong feelings either way, but it really struck me hard this year when I had to compare "Shroud" to "The Incandescent". I had a moment of disbelief that these two radically different books were up for the same award

It was a genuine honor to convert reprint rights to one of 2025's most conceptually thrilling stories into silver. Maybe next year the Bullion Prerogative (thanks @louisinglishall.bsky.social for the name) can be joined by a Spice, or possibly Tea, Prerogative, delivered via clipper ship

I've been brainstorming ways I could include unique codes on a per-physical-book basis, so that if you order the physical book online you can just scan a QR code on the title page and get access to the community and get a cheap ebook version etc. It's not easy to create a book+ebook SKU

Maya Angelou on the joys of being edited
I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

I really love the $1000 tier that says "ARB will work with you to figure out an appropriate gesture of appreciation for your contribution" More Kickstarters should have a tier that's just "we'll owe you a favor"

I just finished "Slow Gods" by Claire North via a recommendation by @aptshadow.bsky.social, and I loved it. Beyond the cultural richness of the far future setting, I think there's something very appealing about the juxtaposition of real-feeling technology set against an element of the numinous
