Labour are welcome to run a party-vote-only campaign in Christchurch Central if they're worried about vote splitting. (NB if Stephens gets in for National, the likely result is someone higher ranked on the list missing out.)

I'm still fucking mad that the last Labour government just decided not to defend their own fucking policy and kept reshaping it to please an opposition who'd never be happy - and they're still so cowed by that experience that they've been near silent on the developing and huge Cost Of Water Crisis.

From the data, it looks like a significant number of voters put Douglas Brown 1 and Jillaine Heather 2? And a close-ish thing that Bianca Grizhar got through ahead of Heather?

Is there a pathway to 100% renewable electricity (or even to get meaningfully closer to that) if we're dotting the countryside with data centres? 2/2
130
Simon Britten for Papanui @thinkpapanui.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Understood - but if rising demand means that usage is constantly outstripping renewable production, then potentially renewable as a % of total generation, and therefore net climate impact, doesn't improve? I think that's broadly what the Ireland example in these comments shows? 1/2

What I read into this announcement is Nats panicking because they're bleeding party votes to TOP. (And my further take is that TOP are less likely to pick up progressive voters, because said voters aren't keen on a party willing to form government with the Nats.) #nzpol

The opening paragraphs of a Facebook post by Simon Watts MP (Minister of Climate Change, Minister of Local Government):
"I've written to mayors and councillors across New Zealand outlining my concerns about the use of extreme climate forecasting scenarios that can drive unnecessary costs onto ratepayers.
Kiwis expect councils to make practical, evidence-based decisions that are proportionate to the risks they face, not default to worst-case assumptions that can unnecessarily increase rates and delay investment,
That's why I've directed officials to take stock of..."

National isn't being PULLED to the right by NZF or Act, they are CHOOSING to go in that direction. Yes, you can partly put the blame on Luxon being a wet paper towel at the negotiating table, but really it's because this is what National want to do, but never want to speak of it.

The image features blue ocean water, a fish above the waves, and people standing on a jetty at the lower left. Green Party branding appears at the top.Green Party Policy 2026 graphic titled “The Facts.” The graphic lists four statements: up to 100,000 people get sick from unsafe drinking water every year; nearly half of rivers are unsafe for swimming; three out of four lakes are unhealthy; and New Zealand is the only country still bottom trawling in the South Pacific. The text appears in dark green on a light background. Ocean waves span the bottom of the image, with a white sailboat on the right-hand side. Green Party branding appears at the top right.Campaign graphic titled “Green Party Policy 2026.” Text reads: “Nature should come before corporate profits.” Additional text says the Green Party will prioritise the health of rivers, lakes and the moana, and ensure drinking water is safe.
