Think twice about when to launch your nuclear war: traffic jam may ruin your day!

What is the timeline of this kind of proposals? The UK retired the WE.177 in the 90s. It would probably have to redesign a warhead, or rework existing designs, without the possibility of testing and, presumably, with strained US support (French support maybe?).

On the value of going back to the classical foundations of our concepts: sometimes, they are very well written. Such is the case with Laing’s The Divided Self - "within ourselves there can only be our footprints".

Les données du PRIO et de l'Uppsala Conflict Database (UCPD) sont de très bonnes qualités pour les conflits contemporains. Il y a une bonne discussion des dimensions méthodo chap. 2 et 5 là dedans (livre magistral, par ailleurs)

Currently reading this. It’s nice. Interesting to see how actors navigating the constraints of the nuclear age invariably lead to changes in domestic structure.

Je lis Les Deux Mégots, sur l’affaire Alessandri et, soyons honnête, c’est une accumulation de dingueries, mais celle-ci frappe assez fort.

Great piece by S. Fetter and S. Phillipe on UK targeting policies and their consequences. This point, on intent and harm, is essential for any debates on the legality and morality of nuclear deterrence choices. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Flora Lewin's 1967 book on the Palomares accident is not great, but its last lines are very illuminating about the nature of the nuclear age:

If there is one book to read these days, I think this is the one.
Cover from the book "Exit from Hegemony, the unraveling of the American Global Order" by Alexander Cooley and Daniel Nexon. The cover features Trump turning his back to the reader. The second edition features Biden, instead of Trump, doing the same.

There is a lot to say about the Euronuke discourse, but this bit is quite annoying: why do we measure the requirements of deterrence relative to the US arsenal, thus assuming that its size is the clearly reasonable one, and not relative to strategic needs?

James Digby on Bruce-Briggs' book (likely The Shield of Faith, 1988).That he considered this detail important enough to be corrected is probably telling, but not sure of what.
Bit from an interview with James Dibgy. The text says "Briggs never really had great credentials as a scientist in this area, he's got a lot of the arguments down quite well. He makes a few mistakes. He talks about my changing our fallout shelter into a wine cellar later on. Actually, it was a wine cellar and fallout shelter from the very beginning, so there are some mistakes like that. But I'm surprised at how well he did"

RAND in the 50s/60s attracted, and attracts still, fascination. It's far from undeserved but it's interesting how much of this was pure intellect (available in large quantity there), and how much was performance of intellect. (bit from an itw w James Digby)

This estimate (10kt=200 casualties) feels... optimistic (not impossible, for sure, but optimistic)
Excerpt from the article: "Another apparent effect when examining the operational level is grasping the number of casualties produced by the detonation and what that means for combat operations. The figure shows six motorized infantry platoons as red (severe casualty or fatality), one as yellow (degraded), and one medical platoon as red (severe casualty or fatality). With roughly 30 Soldiers per platoon, that
would be over 200 severe casualties." This last sentence is highlighted.
