If Lost Highway is playing somewhere in LA my ears perk up like a cartoon dog spotting a cat walking by. You know I’ll be at this. I’d like to go to a couple more in the Barry Gifford retrospective but our dance card is filling up. Gotta save that time and money for other cool shit.

Took some visiting friends to Yang Chow in Chinatown last night, got lots of leftovers today. Their spicy Szechuan wonton soup is indescribably delicious, we often order extra at the end of the night to bring home. This time I just mixed it straight into my rice. So good.

I ended up really enjoying Kinki, but kinda wish it hadn’t been sold as ‘the scariest movie of the fest.’ It was good, it was creepy, but it was also kinda corny and cheap (not necessarily a complaint). In other words, pretty standard fare for Koji Shiraishi. #Filmsky #Horrorsky

#NowWatching Kinki (2026) New one from Koji Shiraishi, and organizers are saying this is the scariest movie of this years Beyond Fest. Shiraishi is often decidedly goofy but I’m a fan and looking forward to this. A surprise screening for me thanks to some open RSVPs. #Filmsky #Horrorsky

Was gonna post a thread about Look Back, the new Hirokazu Kore-eda, but it got too long so I made it a Letterboxd review. I loved it, I have thoughts. #Filmsky
boxd.it
A ★★★★½ review of Look Back (2026)
Kore-eda’s films are warm, gentle, full of life, humane, and typically lacking an out-and-out villain. At their best they feel like live-action Ghiibli films, and that is certainly how I would describ...

Just got out of a screening of Look Back, the US Premiere of the newest from one of my favorite living directors, Hirokazu Kore-eda, and now I’m sitting in my car to collect myself after sobbing in the dark with a bunch of strangers. #Filmsky

Got a screening or two later today but you can never have enough movies! #NowWatching The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014) I really enjoyed this when it came out. It’s got a really clever premise for a sequel/remake. Been wanting to revisit for awhile. #Filmsky #Horrorsky

Holy cow guys Drag was a blast. When it rolls out you need to see it in a theatre: this is an audience movie, best seen with a crowd. We had a packed house and half the fun was being in a crowd that was all laughing, screaming, and squirming in their seats. It’s a wild one. #Filmsky

Watching Harvest Brood last week put me in the mood to watch another independent regional horror about a series of killings set decades earlier, and filmed in a partial-documentary style. #NowWatching The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976) #Filmsky #Horrorsky

Just reading about The Last Bookstore here in LA, about how they’re pro-AI and anti-LGBT. The only thing TLB had going for it was instagrammable decor & architecture. Plenty of better options around (and the central library down the street which is massive and gorgeous), spend your money better.

One of the best of last year. If you want moody SOV horror with gallons of blood, strange creature designed, and slimy practical effects, you need to get on the Joe Meredith train.

Final one for today. #NowWatching Ataraxia (2025) I can’t find Teratomorph, the sequel to South Mill District, so this will be the last little dose of Joe Meredith’s fallen world. These are really gross and fun and I’ll definitely be coming back to visit in the future. #Filmsky #Horrorsky
