OK no sorry it’s not using a fly’s brain to do all that stuff. It’s using a network wired in the ways the map of the fly’s brain is mapped. These are different objects. And yes, I realize this makes me a Buzzkill

If the science paper includes an illustration like this one you just know it’s going to go hard
An amazing illustration of a human, a robot, a fly, a leaf, and a primordial-looking arthropod each peering out from within a drab brown box labeled “Physical World” into the inky mathematical realm of blobs, polygons, and equations.

This one was a doozy to report; I visited clean rooms and wet labs, played Pong against brain cells, and talked with bioethicists, neuroscientists, toxicologists, and computer scientists about where consciousness begins and ends. It changed how I think about life, intelligence, and computing:

60 years ago, MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum created a chatbot named ELIZA. Programmed to respond in the style of a Rogerian psychotherapist, it proved uncannily absorbing—to the point that Weizenbaum, alarmed by how easily people confided in a computer program, became the first AI critic.
