The Good Book Life – Bookish Chats
This Friday, 12th June, we are kicking off the first of our Friday Bookish Chats over on The Good Book Life Channel. Our first guests are Lisa Fransson and Maggy Whitehouse - two authors with some opinions about the National Year of Reading, our first topic. The 2026 theme, 'Go All In', encourages people to explore reading through their passions, and emphasizes that reading is not limited to books.

Lots to Celebrate for The Slab
Here at The Slab we've had a dramatic end to May - and just as I type that, cue the sound of thunder as the continued heatwave brings us a bit of a storm. Basically one clap's worth... and now it's back to hot and dry again. However, the drama here is good. All silver lining, no cloud, as we celebrate a bit of success.

“The distance, unquestionably. It is impossible for me, and I suspect for any human, to really grasp just how remote deep space is, how far you are from help; this is something which made it particularly into the dénouement of ‘The Tumbleweed’. If something comes for you out there, even the inexorable dangers of depressurisation or suffocation, civilisations will have risen and fallen by the time you are discovered.“

It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'tired'. This extract is from a story by CJ Hooper and is available in Vivid Worlds #BookQW #BookSky theslab.press/store/
Back at the hall there was more noise. Dafydd Adren was trying to address the crowd.
“Yes, we have heard from the government this afternoon. They noted the drop in power as one of the turbines collapsed into the sea. We informed them that this was the result of a Cetaceous attack, which they do not believe. We have been accused of failing to maintain the farm, and therefore the grid. We know that this is wrong and have suggested that
they send someone out to check if they do not believe us. They are sending out some inspection boats.”
Finally, Dafydd had been met with approval, though he himself just looked tired.
Daniel had been analysing his findings with help from Mary and was frustrated that they had not been able to operate the sonar radar and the recorder at the same time.
“I’m not sure there’s a correlation between that low hum and the approach of the storm.”
“What are you getting at, Mary?”
“I first thought it was the wind farm, but it’s not. I think there’s something else.” Mary waved various different pads of notes at each of them. “That extra hum is always there but something must vary. We need more info. We need to go out again.”

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'girl' #BookQW and this is an extract from a story by @laurenwrites.bsky.social in Hiding Under the Leaves.
Book cover and extract reading:
“No one would’ve thought you could last this long in the wilderness. Too much of a city girl. You’ve never even camped at a music festival, preferring to find a local B&B within commuting distance. Back then, you didn’t listen to the talk of “missing the full experience”; you’d rather have a real shower to warm you up at the end of those long days. You can’t deal with mud caked on your skin, not even for a beauty treatment. It’s too much sensory overload.
Yet here you are: no shower since you left civilisation, crouching on your haunches and stoking a campfire, alone in the middle of an ancient woodland and covered in dust. Senses both dulled and heightened. You tell yourself it was your only choice, really. You needed space. You needed time to think. Life is too, too noisy. How are you meant to figure out who you are and what you’re meant to do if you’re surrounded by the noise of London all the damn time? You told yourself that a week in the woods would clear your mind, help you figure out what a woman should be at this age, past 40 yet without the expected trappings and baggage. When there’s no man, no kids, no career… Nothing but a whole big pile of steaming nothing.
