Our study supports the idea that local shocks, such as those in the protostellar jet, can cause an enhancement of ionized particles near protostars. If confirmed, this will have big implications for how these systems evolve: ionization couples gas to magnetic fields and drives chemistry (3/3)🧪🔭☄️

Kamber Schwarz @theschwarz.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
We use observations from the IRAM 30 m and NOEMA of CO and HCO+ (which forms from CO in the presence of ionization particles) to constrain the ionization rate. We find ionization rates of 1e-16 to 1e-13 per second, way higher than the 1.3e-17 value folks usually assume (2/3) 🔭☄️🧪
Background colors map the derived ionization rate in three protostellar envelopes. Contours show the C18O emission. Grey dashed lines are perpendicular to the small scale outflows. All three envelopes have ionization rates much higher than seen in the diffuse ISM.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
