So recently I learned that female echidnas grow pouches to carry their fertilized eggs. As in, they don't have pouches until they have a fertilized egg, then their body grows one. So I finally had an excuse to draw Shade the Nocturnus from #Sonic Chronicles (2008)! (Traditional lines, digital color)

Shade the Echidna from Sonic Chronicles, with an egg inside her belly-pouch, representative of how real-life short-beaked echidna females have pouches to carry their single eggs. The egg is commonly white with brown or tan spots. The father of the egg is meant to be ambiguous. Shade is wearing her bodysuit, modified by having the midriff removed to make room for her egg and pouch. Carrying the egg is a strain on her lower back, but she's not angry nor frustrated about it.
