This was the best response. Second best: “How dare you… the former Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party… be so stupid?”

First race back since my Achilles injury a while back: The Cullman Oktoberfest 5K — 27:23. Was 5th in my division, so I’ll take it! Feel like I probably could have pushed a bit more, but was a little hesitant to fully open it up given the past injury.

Today we hit our goal for runners signed up for the 5K I’m directing! At this rate, we’ll beat our stretch goal! We have almost twice as many runners as last year, and still have 3+ weeks to go!

I hope I never get sprayed. Also worth noting I was about 2mi from my car at that point, so I would have had to run back, trying not to throw up the whole way, and then drive home destroying the interior of my car, lol. It would have been SO BAD.

Came across a skunk on my run this morning and for a hot second thought I was going to get sprayed, which really would have put a damper on the talk I’m supposed to give at the local Historical Society today!

God, LinkedIn just sucks. Like, it’s always kind of sucked, but now it’s just a place where AI grifters are using AI slop to sell AI to other AI grifters, and it’s just so bad! It’s like an infection!

The number of times I’ve gotten this exact response from various agencies and departments about records I KNOW exist is too goddamn high. And I don’t have the time or budget to fight it… which is what they’re betting on. Pisses me off to no end.

I was at Hummelwald Forest recently, again taking shelter from the rain the rain, when I noticed unusual activity in a nearby puffball forest.  It turns out that falling drops of rain were striking the puffballs and causing spores to eject. Very cool. 🍄📷  🍄 #FungiFriends  #Mushrooms 🌿

I think the thing that has just been getting to me lately is how selfish everyone seems to be. Like that used to be a source of shame, and now people post it proudly, beckoning others to do the same.

On this trip, I managed to get out to three different beaches with the ham radio. Made contacts in the US from Florida to Utah up to NY. Made DX contacts to Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Caymans. Also just got to enjoy beautiful beaches with lots of wildlife! Overall not a bad trip!

Likely just haven’t updated yet. Same thing happened with Gulf of Mexico. Google changed first, then later Apple.

Don’t get me wrong; Google sucks and deserves to die. But this argument is not even close to being a reason why.

I feel like we’ve been over this before with the Gulf of America thing. It’s the database that the program draws from that determines borders, names, etc. on G-Maps, and that database is usually maintained by the country’s government in which you access the maps.

Let me get this straight. Sometimes a famous person dies and everyone is nice about it? Merely because of their deeds during life?

one of my college bff's family grew up down the street from Dolly. Carl forgot his wallet and asked Ben's family to cover the cost of his taxi. Dolly came down the next day, in full glam, and gave them a check for the cost while sassing Carl for being forgetful.

Tonight I’ve had texts or calls from members of the Friends of the Libraries (directing their 5K), the Amateur Radio Club (spearheading our regional mesh), and the local historical society (giving a talk next month).

Me, a person who has worked very hard to inundate myself into multiple groups with several projects going at once: “GAH!! Why are so many people texting me????”

lol, same. It was just striking to be in some of those forums, looking around, and realizing I was likely the youngest person in the room. As someone who’s closer to 40 than 30 at this point, it was an odd sensation, lol.

This started, in part, as something I could talk to my FIL about, but now I think it’s a hobby that I can do until I’m 80 (as evidenced by the average age of the Hamfest attendees 😬)

Went to the Huntsville Hamfest today and geeked out with a bunch of people about Ham Radio. Honestly had no idea I’d enjoy this hobby quite so much, but it scratches that itch in my brain for basically an infinite rabbit hole.

My biggest worry is that people will see it and think it’s some kind of Flock bullshit, even though there’s no camera.

Dr. Thomas — @therealthomasm.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
It’s getting wider, but I don’t know if you can rely on that. It does degrade after several hops, so it’s better for community or regional comms. You’d be better off trying to figure out satellite communications as backup comms for that situation. Maybe HF ham radio with NVIS at that distance.
010
Dr. Thomas — @therealthomasm.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Our amateur radio club, for example, is putting up repeaters at our ham radio and GMRS repeater sites, which should greatly increase the range of everyone else’s individual repeaters.
010
Dr. Thomas — @therealthomasm.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
It’s another arrow in the radio quiver. I like that it’s decentralized, but you really have to have buy-in from several people in a community at minimum to make it worth it. But IF you can do that (and get your repeater high enough), you can easily get hops across a very large region.

Been messing around with MeshCore, and finally got around to building a little solar repeater hacked together out of a $10 garden path light from Lowe’s. Not gonna lie, I’m pretty proud of it, lol.

I do wonder how much of this is due to consumer backlash and how much is due to the EU’s policies forcing their hand.
